The mystery of the missing piston

it should look more like this (and this ran for around a second at 4k once the piston failed)

Well technically it could run without a piston, if there is nothing for the rod to catch on.

if it doesnt catch, it wont break, however, i would expect to see some "peining" of the rod/bore.....

Yeah i saw this on FDUK forum and straight away i called BS on the whole thing. The oil would be like water because of dilution of the petrol streaming into the crankcase amongst a 1000 other things that would call a major fault up.

for a test... pull off one of your HT leads or coils.

I did this and my car was still smooth but a bit slower. Ah, the beauty of a v6. Frind M5 had two cylinders go down and he said he didn't even notice it until running a scan!

My pinto will also run fairly well on 3 BUT you know it has a cylinder down with it being a four pot (plus my ECU starts screaming at me about it detecting major misfires!)

BS on the whole story linked by OP.

The OP in that thread seems genuine, wonder if someone is taking him for a ride? I simply can't believe that anyone is giving it a shred of credibility though, people are making up random and totally implausible reasons why this could have happened and why no symptoms were noted rather than drawing the logical conclusion.

Me and my mate have just had another look at the photos is that even a petrol engine he's showing photos of?

Other thing worthy of point is when that missing piston conron reaches the bottom of its stroke wouldn't the wrist pin be just outside the bottom of the bore, hence it should have come through the block?

'Gudgeon pin' please, we aren't yanks ;)

The end of the con rod would not necessarily drop below the bottom of the block, it would depend on that particular engine design. Even if it didn't it would make one hell of a racket, there's no way you couldn't notice it unless you were completely deaf.

BTW, the visible piston is correct for a Zetec SE engine, they don't have the usual shaped piston crown you may expect from a 4 valve per cylinder engine.

However, why would the gudgeon pin have wear marks in the middle if no piston had ever been fitted?

Ah ok, not sure why pin wear would be present, the thread starter has thrown his toys out of his pram and moved the thread, clearly he didn't expect so many people to respond or talk about it and someone on that forum seems to know ocuk are talking about it.

I feel it could be a nice scam to try and get some money out of ford during these hard times, i hope it comes down hard on them if they are trying to pull a scam, if the engine had done less than 10 miles i could understand this being real, thats something you will notice the second you drive it away from the dealer.

its not just something the driver would notice, both the knock sensor and camshaft position need that surge of combustion on each cylinder to be read properly.

not to mention the insane amounts of oil that would have been pooring down the exhaust valves.

I had an old villiers engine years back where the gudgeon pin had been fitted without circlips. The pin milled a nice slot in the sides of the bore.

Due to the size of the piston and the short stroke, it had barely lost any compression! The slot was around 5mm deep either side of the piston.
