right there are too many threads here all with the general aim of asking why linux is better than windows, nothing betters another. One may be faster but expensive, to some people thats better but to others cheap and hard is better. anyway i would be willing to type up an explanation to avoid silly threads.

I think (hope) he means faster to pick up?

Not sure about Hard and Cheap either. I find Linux easier to install and use than windows for 90% of stuff, and where it's not easier, it makes up for it by being better.

As I put it in another post just a few mins ago.....whenever Linux asks you to put in a bit more effort than you would in the winworld, it always pays you back with options and possubilities you'd never have there.

The best comparison, I believe..............

Task:setup a usuable operating system on PC with bare drive. OS must have full office and web capability, multimedia and image editing, everything but full on 3d gaming.

Case A.
Windows XP/Vista
Boot CD/DVD
Prep drive
install basic OS
reboot a bit
fidget about with drivers
Buy and Install MS orifice
nstall firefox (Default IE=unfit remember)
Purchase and install photoshop
Buy and install lots of other stuff.
Time=approx 2-2.5 hours.
Cost=Lots

Case B:
Knoppix.
Boot CD/DVD
Time=2.5 mins
Cost=2p (for the cd)

So.. there are too many "Windows vs Linux" threads, and the answer to this is to create yet another "Windows vs Linux" thread?

Besides, no one reads stickies.

If you think there's a need for such a thread then feel free to write one. I'm sure you'll get some input and constructive criticism from others once you've posted it.

If sufficient numbers agree that it should be stickied then I'm sure they'll post words to that effect in the thread. Kinda difficult to say whether something should be stickied without having read what you're going to write first of all :)

I really don't think there is a point. All OS's have advantages and disadvantages it all depends which one is the right choice for you. Which is personal opinion, there is no right answer. You can't say which is easier to use either because likewise that is a personal preference as well. Sure there are some observations you can conclude from the hard facts but not that many. As with most things in computing a lot is open to debate.

This is absolutely the truth. Windows vs Linux threads are the creations of idiots.

I would rather have an essential apps for linux thread with links ;) and a this hardware works/don't work thread :cool:

I personally don't want to come to the linux part of the forum to discuss windows, that gets enough forum space as it is :p

There are plenty of threads about software recommendations, but I'd hesitate to make a big list of recommended software because there's so much diversity in programs for most things you'd think of doing. I might like Banshee, but you might be an AmaroK supporter, for instance. We don't need links because for most of us finding the software is automated by a package manager. If I decide that I'm tired of Xine and want to try VLC I don't have to go to any web sites to install anything.

Hardware that works is a bit tough since it's dependent on
  1. The distro in use
  2. The version of the distro or software
  3. The version of the hardware

It changes all the time as drivers, distros, and hardware advances. I'm not sure how we'd make that work in the context of a forum.

windows vs linux threads are the creation of uneducated people, not idiots. also i will explain what linux is, how it can be compared to windows and how they differer. What open source is and how it benefits linux.

Sorry Billy, I shouldn't of been so general.
What I mean when having links to popluar apps isn't for the downloading of them but so I can read about them myself and see if they would be something that I would like/use myself. Hope that makes sense?
I know I can google and sift through lots of info in fact I love google but instead of spending hours on google (being a linux noob) a list of apps and links to them would save people (me) a lot of time ;).

On the hardware side maybe a dont use this could be helpful ie: dont get such and such wireless router or such and such webcam because it will not work under linux sort of thing.
Or if you use such and such hardware it will work but will take a lot of effort to get it to work?
Iim sure peeps will come from windows and just assume the hardware that was fine in windows will be fine under linux, which isn't the case and as such could save peeps some money.

Not everyone researches the products they buy and what they will or wont work with.
I know that people on the forum who have been into linux for sometime will know all this but a lot of people don't know where to start so the first place a lot will go is a forum.

Some will have a problem and run a mile never to return others like problems because they get stuck in and learn from them.

I will always search forums and the net if i'm needing answers to problems but still think it would be nice to save some time ;)

hope thats a little clearer :confused:
