I finally shifted my WoW addiction and quit the game to focus on other things but this wont stop me from being tempted by one of the upcoming 'next generation' MMORPG's that start coming out at the end of this year. Been reading up on them. Theres quite a few very promising titles on the horizon:

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - Probably the first big name 'next generation' MMO to arrive, made by the makes of EQ, promises to be an alternative to WoW etc without the tedium of grinding, offers a lot of solo/casual content but also offers raid content as well. Havent read much about the PvP element.

Lord of the Rings Online - Dont know too much about this one, thought id mention it as its a big name liscense and theres a lot of hype around it. I havent really looked into it as ive never been a fan of anything LOTR but would look into this game if it turned out to be decent.

Age of Conan - Been reading about this a lot and it gets me a little bit more excited about it each time! Claims to offer the usual solo/raid PvE content but the PvP content in this game looks excellent, mini games in the style of CTF, king of the hill etc, and the drunken brawl idea looks good.

Warhammer Online - Now this is the one MMORPG if I was to pick one from the lot that im most looking forward to. Im really excited about this after watching a few videos and reading a few sites, to some it looks like a copy of WoW visually (graphics wise and UI), and even the combat system looks similar, but perhaps thats not a bad thing considering how successful WoW is. The main selling point of this game seems to be PvP, the RvR element of taking opposing factions towns and looting the towns treasure looks amazing. The quest system looks interesting, meaning everyone in that current area can join in. However there hasnt been much information on PvE/raid content which would need to be well implemented otherwise I can see the game getting boring very quickly. But this is easily the one game im looking forward to the most, just hope its implemented well.

I know ive probably missed out a couple, (Star Trek Online springs to mind) but I just thought id find out what everyones looking forward to and what maybe the game to finally knock WoW off its perch?

I'm looking forward to Warhammer out of the lot. I can't wait to see what the Chaos army looks like :D.

Same character names as WoW then? :p

I'm not sure any of them will knock WoW off it's perch but i'm not sure they really need to either.

I agree Warhammer looks very promising but I'd be carefull about saying it looks like WoW as the Warhammer mythos has been around a tad longer. There's a brilliant Penny Arcade strip illustrating this, I can't get to it atm but will post it later.

Lotr looks fantastic but will live and die on how it uses the material and makes the player feel involved in what's happening in Middle Earth. The classes are very different as magic exists but isn't really used by normal people there aren't any wizard/magician classes. I think this is due to go beta in the next few months so we should get more info soon, there's a longish gameplay vid on the game site too.

When looking at LOTR online I was really diappointed, looks like a really bad game. I am really looking forward to Warhammer tho.

Being an old time EQ'er, I am looking forward to Vanguard hoping Brad will be able to pull off the feel of the original EQ, pre-POP.

Vanguard looks promising but I fear its going to be released to soon inside all the WoW expansion hype and just get swallowed up by it. :(

"Knock WOW off it's perch" - All i can say is that it's true.
People don't neccessarily play the best games out there.
WOW is awful, yet it has a lot of people playing it (and moaning about it).
Blizzard have done a hell of a job getting so many people to play a sub-standard game, my respect goes to them over the marketing.
It certainly doen't go to them with regards the game they have created...

As far as I can tell the majority of the new MMORPG's are following much of the same system, with levels.
I need to do some reading up, but whichever MMORPG hits market first where they don't use levels and that you increase your skill by using it and are forced to use it against/on harder/higher creatures/resources as the skill goes up (a la UO) will be the first to get my money.

The level chasing games get boring quickly as everyone rushes off to get to the maximum level as quickly as possible.

*snip*

i think this should be added "in your opinion"

a lot of people (myself included) play wow and do actually find it to be a good game

that vanguard games website looks a bit unprofessional, i suppose im judging a book by its cover though

I think a big factor with WoW and its success, more so than with any other MMORPG to a certain exstent is that with the way its been designed, is that a lot of people are addicted and im not using that word lightly. I was seriously addicted for a long time, I was scared to miss raids because of the fact you would lose DKP or an item drop, PvP'ers who wish to reach rank 14 litrally have to give up 3/4 months of their lives with 15(+) hours a day playtime to reach their goal. Its a serious addiction in my opinion, rather than people actually enjoying it.

Their is nothing out at the moment that can compare to WOW, I tried Archlord last night OMG its looks awful, it looks like WOW would have been if it was made 10 years ago, all the good titles are penned for 2007 releases which seems such a long way off.

I went back to SWG after 14 months away and it is terrible, I have purchased WOW again now :/

Go and try SWG and you will see how good WOW is.

Stopped playing wow 2 months ago and started playing EQ2 for a couple of weeks. What a difference and I really cant believe I stuck with wow for 14 months. The endgame instance grind in wow is soul destroying, and your right you are affraid to miss them incase an item drops and you loose dkp, and if you start missing raid chances are you'll be booted from the guild or never see another raid ever again.

I havnt got the endgame in EQ2, but reading up it looks nowhere near as insane as wow is. EQ2 has had 2 expansions, another arriving shortly, 2 adventure packs (mini expansion packs) and updates/fix weekly, a community that actually wants to help people, infinite amount of quests, better class system and more races, and a tradeskill system that makes wow look like, well, not so wow. Overall a better MMORPG than wow will ever be.

I suspect most of those playing wow have never played another mmorpg, like i was, and just cant face changing game after putting so much time in to it. There comes a point when you just have had enough of its glaring faults.

And in EQ2 it doesnt feel like you're just there the level, it feels more like a game.

a lot of people, me included, don't play WoW just because we have to play some sort of mmo and the likes. I play for fun, i enjoy wow and i enjoy progressing through the game :)

SOE made a mess of SWG I never played but heard about it. They made a mistake, cant see them doing the same again. But of course Blizzard are perfect.
