BBC iplayer is now available to download for this phone from the ovi store is anyone's interested.

It's been available a while, though the interface seems to be based on the inbuilt browser anyway, and isn't very smart or fluid. Is it a new version?

Whilst I'm here, anyone on this new firmware?

Lots of people seem to have problems with it, and some none at all. I'm thinking perhaps they're doing it wrong!

Do you know if you can back up access point settings and restore them after the update? That's the only thing that really takes any time to setup on my phone.

I have the Garmin Mobile XT satnav on my E71 - works really well. A friend from work has the Navigon MobileNavigator 7 on his Windows Mobile HTC Touch HD and it looks fantastic as it shows you which lanes to be in at turnings with 3D view etc. Navigon also have a version for the E71 but may not look as good
The Garmin site doesn't list it as compatible with E71, but you say you installed it anyway and it works without issues? (like screen dimension issues or anything?)

Navigon though is indeed listed as compatible with E71. I might consider one of these in future. PDF with list of phones

Thanks for tips

Garmin Mobile XT is 100% compatible with the phone (version 5.00.50s60.9) and fits the screen perfectly. Only bummer about is mine is it doesn't have the ability to search by postcodes :( but I have seen screenshots where you can, so may just be me.

On another note - I'm still on version 1 of the Three firmware (how can you tell exactly?) and my phone works fine. Have read that some people have updated their firmware to the latest version. How do you do this? is it safe? does all the Three settings that enable you to make calls etc. retain?

Is it worth flashing? I don't want to screw up a perfectly working phone tbh but I'm intrigued if it can make a great phone even better

The camera is pap btw

EDIT: just read alexhull24 comments on previous page - I forgot he already answered all my questions :) I'm still not sure though

ok alexhull24 I was feeling brave and followed your link and updated to the latest v4 firmware. All seems to be ok so far *touchwood* just having to set everything up the way I had it before now :)

Cool, I'm about to make the upgrade myself this week. Be sure to let us all know if you have any issues.

You won't regret debranding it, the first release firmware is dire. You'll probably notice a massive improvement in the GPS sensitivity and accuracy.

Managed to now configure the phone to be like it was before with updated versions of software. Can't say I have noticed a massive improvement over anything tbh, might just be a bit more responsive going through menus etc.

I must have had a very good version 1 firmware lol

on the positive side least it's no worse/bricked :D

I have just received my Nokia E71 from the auction site. Excellent phone but I cannot get anything when I dial (*#0000#) thus I could not get the info on the firmware version.

Can anyone help me out how to do it? I know it sounds very daft question but when i type the combination and Send Service Command appear after entering this choice the answer is: Unknown command.

What do I do wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Paul

You just type *#0000# on the main screen and it automatically brings up the firmware information. If it doesn't, then it's a fake.

Thanks Mrochester! It is not fake :) as I am getting
100.07.76
08-06-2008
RM-346
Nokia E71-1 (01)

If I now try to update the firmware would it send me directly to 400.xx.xx?

Can I do upgrade to 300.xx.xx only?

Sorry if the question sounds rhetoric to most of you, but this stuff is new to me.

Cheers,
Paul

It'll update to whatever is the latest version available for your particularl E71, you can't choose what version you want.

Am I right when thinking that the mobile is unlocked but it might not be unbranded and this is why it has not automatically upgraded to higher firmware? Do I need to de-brand it?

I have read about changing the code, upgrading and getting the old code back. Is that procedure kind of safe-ish? The camera i snot performing well and this is one of the complaints from the 100.xx.xx firmware.

Cheers,
Paul

Well I'd hope that you could get beyond the original 100 firmware without having to change anything. Does it really say that V.100 is the latest version?
