Is that what makes it taste like sick? Always wondered what their secret ingredient was.
It was a few years ago that I was visited the US but yeah my understanding is that acid was used for historical reasons. Don't know if they keep same recipe globally but butyric acid can be found in parmesan cheese, spoiled butter, and vomit.

You can tell how awful Hershey’s is when you watch these YouTube vids showing Americans trying British snacks. They go crazy over Cadbury’s like it’s the best choc in the world. To us, Cadburys is just a basic cheap chocolate.
