good evening folks, been looking at investing in a nice new shiney i7 rig. ive pretty much decided to go with a nVidia GFX card but was wondering whether to get a GTX295 and SLi them once they come down in price.

OR should i wait til the end of March and get a brand new 300 series card?

at the moment im growing impatient and just thinking about getting the 295 but if the 300 series are going to be as great as everyone is mkaing them out to be i'll hold off for a while.

Whatever you do... don't get 2x GTX295 - they just don't have the VRAM to give good performance at the resolutions required to make the most of quad SLI and are hideously bad value for money for the performance you do get.

I'd say get a 5850 for now and see what the 400 series is like or if you want to stay nVidia just get a single cheap GTX260 and wait to see.

Don't get a 295 as they are far too expensive, if you can find one, aswell as only directx10 cards.

Do not get any 300 series NVidia card also as they are just rebrands of lower 200 series parts.

The cards you are waiting for, and waiting is the best way to describe it, is the 400 series. This is NVidia's new line of DirectX 11 cards that are well behind schedule. As for timeframe to when they will become available you should be looking to wait for another couple of months, well into may, even then you may find it hard to find any. Even then they won;t be as cheap as the ATi competition.

what?

you mean they will have poor bang for buck, as it seems the one that supposed to take on the HD5870 is not very good at it I m lead to believe ( comes about just a few percent faster)

I would get a HD5850 and overclock the nuts off it, or two, reason is because they are only £200 ish they can overclock to the same levels as the HD5870 and clock for clock there is not much between them

Seems like your set on Nvidia...
Have you considered 285's in SLI?

You will struggle to find a new GTX295 anywhere for sale now as Nvidia have EOLed them (but not announced it yet). They have been out of stock for about 3-4 months now and Nvidia are not making anymore of them. You may see the last batch after the GTX4xxx series launch but I doubt it very much.

Just wait for GTX4xxx as that will be faster anyway & DX11 technology GTX295 is great but obviously getting old now!!

ok so ill re-raise my question, will it be worth waiting for the "400" series, altho ive heard they are going to be called GF100 or something? not sure.

hmmmm you raise a good point, so is there a nVidia card that is worth going for now and maybe just SLi-ing it later on when it becomes cheaper?

or is it a case of either wait for the new GF100/GTX400 or just get a 5850 or summits?

No, no Nv card is worth it over ATI atm unless you menage to get a GTX285 or something for HD4890 price

if you want now you are best off with ATI, also if you want a cool running PC than ATI again as the new fermis will be steam houses looking at it

Rhys - thanks for being unhelpful. either answer the question or dont. simple.

ok so if i was to go with ATI, it would have to be 5870, is the 5970 worth looking in to?

or shall i just make this in to a generic query of : "i'm getting a new i7 rig, whats the best gfx card to put in it?"

I'd get a 5870 for now, then you'll have the option to add another one later if you feel the need for a bit more speed later.

£530+ on a G/card is just too much to spend for me, but then again I'm a tight arse ;)
