the nVidia waiting game

now? limited to 1024x768 cause im uising an old nokia monitor (dont knock it, it was free :P) altho i am using a x1650pro which is why i am desperate for the upgrade lol.

obviously looking to get right up there with the big dogs with my new rig but not sure whether to put that extra money in to a 5970 or just go with 5870 and then SLi em later on?

Get a 5870 and put the money saved towards the best monitor you can afford as if you get a decent monitor it will last you through many upgrade cycles.
I guess your not going to stretch to something like a Dell 3008WFP so the 5870 performance will be so good you won't be able to tell the difference between the 5870 and the 5970.

The Vapor-X version will probably suite you well.

Thats a pretty low res, My old 8800GT will play comfortably at 1280*1024 without breaking a sweat. You looking to upgrade your monitor soon? maybe get a 5770 and a decent size TFT instead of blowing ya cash on a overpriced graphics card. Just a thought.

to make crossfire/SLI variable you need at least a 24inch screen and gaming at full HD (1080)

or even a HD5870/50 they are both capable cards

I think the HD5850 would suit more as its 100 less than the 70 version plus if overclocked the HD5870 only manages to pull at 10% lead if that

not if one is going to upgrade once fermi comes out thats what I m thinking off

Its a low res because its restricted by the old schoool nokia monitor which wont handle anything over 1024x768 altho i pretty much said that already

im going to be rockinga 22"-24" monitor or what ever i can pick up but ive also got a 42" HD TV that i plug my PC in to when i want to take the **** :)

i may not go for the Fermi if i go for the 5870 :-P

iv had the 5870 and it is a brill card,i only upgraded to the 5970 cos i got the dell 30" and game at 2560x1600 with all settings at max.
if i was you i would go 5870 you will be very happy with your purchase.

5870 it is :) probably going to order it on pay day (the 18th) woop. i was VERY close to pressing buy last night but thought better against it.

If you really insist on getting an NV setup now then in your position only SLI 260's make any sense and they should hold most of their value when it comes to getting rid and upgrading to GTX480 or whatever you fancy.

no no no i wasnt suggesting about getting a card now and then upgrade, i was raising the debate as to whether to it would be worth gettin a 285/295 now and sli-ing later when its cheap or waiting and would the 480/fermi card be worth the wait?

but screw it, im going with a 5870 now anyways :-P if anything else i dont want to wait and they do appear to be the obvious winners :-)

basically the eventual outcome (of the 18th of march) will be:

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz Max / Asus P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard / Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle £663.99
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5870 XXX 1024MB GDDR5 £349.99
Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI PSU £138.99
Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos Silent Full Tower Case - Black £134.98

what we recon?

Ive got HDD's :-P will get a SSD later tho .. .. or might just add:
Corsair Reactor 60GB 2.5" Solid State Hard Drive £145.99 and get it now :-)

altho i cant fully make up my mind about the case but airflow and noise dampening wise, this seems like a good case, plus i like how it looks. i also like the antec 1200 but not sure.

OCZ Vertex Series 60GB £169.99

you mean that one? im looking for around 60GB but without spending too much on it.

No not the Vertex, that was last gen as well.

Either the following drives will be good for you:

Vertex 2 - Big performance
Vertex LE - Big Performance
C300 - Very/Big Performance
Agility 2 - Very good performance
x25-m G2 - Very good performance

Out of all those the x25-m is probably the best choice for you as it is good value and also very good quality. If you look around you can pick one up for the same price as that Vertex you quoted and it will be 80gb (74gb When Formatted).
