I'm intrigued as to why.

I think basically to expect people to have to decipher your post as opposed to read it is a little rude.

The lack of effort in your posts makes it more effort for people to read them, and seeing as it's you making the post, the effort should be on your part, not ours, don't you think?

Why, it's messy!

Just look at it - text speak is fine to save space on a text message, but it's just lazy on the internet.

Our English abilities are pretty lax as it is, im talking the current generation 12-20 year olds. Im part of that group myself so im not trying to be pompus, but still why not spend that little bit of extra effort to spell things correctly.

lol how much effort do you need to put in to understand what U'R means :p :D

It takes marginally more effort to translate ‘u-r’ to ‘your’, so when multiplied by however many text words are in a post it takes considerably more time to read than if the poster had just bothered to type properly in the first place.

Of course, none at all hardly, but it's the start of a slippery slope. I use other forums where txt speak gets pretty out of hand, and in all honesty it's a real chore to read some of the crap those people post.

If you nip it in the bud like they do here, it makes the forums as a whole a far more pleasant experience.

Honest truth, this other forum has posts like:

Code:
'oi m 8, w a t u r kx st u bak my dad sez i s h u d get 1 4 racin'

Which, as far as I can tell, means,

'Excuse me, how much did your KX cost you? My father thinks we should by one to use for racing'

I see it like this;
The fact that you cant even be bothered to type correctly for the benefit of me reading your post, means i cant be bothered to read it. The censor forces you to type properly, which means im more likely to read your posts, and so is the other several hundred people on here who no doubt share my view. This way, everybody gets heard :)

As has already been said, some abbreviations have been censored in an effort to encourage people to use proper spelling, or at least make their posts readable.

Shortly before we added them to the filter there was (if memory serves), a tendancy for some people to post largely in txt speak, which whilst it may save time and be acceptable on a mobile phone which has 12 barely usable keys, and a 40-128 character display is not really acceptable or easily decipherable when used on a forum :)

Remember, txt spellings came about due to the limitations of the phone handset, limitations you do not have on any computer ;)

Bingo

Before the filter was used I for example had a huge amount of trouble reading some posts and basically gave up on helping some users because of it - it was taking me 3-4 times as long to read some posts because I was having to try and translate not only the txt spellings, but the inevitable typographical errors.

what about if your making a post using a mobile phone thats using gprs to access the net and view the fourm? would seem a bit skanky to make the phone use fully type out his words and waste credits.

Considering about 0.0000000005% of the forum's posts are made that way, I think the pros outweigh the cons.
