ummmm im sure you only have to see the car if you've been on a long journey, for example parking the car up going for a walk(outside) then on returning to the car you have to see it to call shotgun. If your in a building and the car is outside or something then you can call shotgun without seeing it as long as you are ready to leave (have shoe's on etc)

This was all debated and finished by the end of page 2 of this thread - including the link to the official Shotgun rules. :)
