*** The official 2018 MacBook Pro thread (it has six cores and everything!) ***

Given the protections you have under consumer law in the UK for up to 6 years. If there is still a problem with it then it would be easy to prove the design flaw existed when it was made and so there is an easy claim. Just look at the repair programme now going on for the last model.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

I don't really consider myself an apple fan as such since I use an Android phone and a Windows desktop. I would say though based on previous experience I wouldn't buy anything other than an apple laptop. The fit, finish, support and hardware integration puts them leagues ahead of any competition.

Having had several terrible experiences with supposedly highly regarded laptops from Dell and HP I wouldn't touch either brand with a bargepole again.

On paper the specs might be better and the price several hundred cheaper but if your use a Dell for a few months, and you depend on it for work, you'll gladly pay the extra for a Macbook!

My 11 months experience doing pro work on the razer blade stealth says otherwise

My 12 months on a £2.1k XPS 15 doing pro work unfortunately agrees with @silvagti

Same position, Android phone, Windows desktop but can't stand windows laptops.
what exactly is the issue?

My razer blade has been going strong for 11 months doing programming every day and photography and video work on it too(but quite taxing thats why i want a 4 core laptop now).

i actually had an old dell xps 15 that lasted me 3 years before i upgraded it to a macbook pro for obvious reasons(this was when all windows laptops suck with battery life, design and build of a macbook pro

My experience of windows laptops is similar - I'm fortunate enough to be able to pretty much get my choice of kit to use, and I've never to date found a Windows laptop to use that's not felt like a massive compromise in some way shape or form. To be clear, that's not about Windows itself. I've stuck with Macbook Pros, all running Windows stuff virtualised, and I've found the hardware and experience just beyond any I've had with any Windows laptops I've used.

Some have come close to be fair. Used an XPS 15 for a while, that was nice, but had some flakiness with my home network which just got on my man boobs so gave it back. Quick liked the Carbon X1 too, the keyboard was nice. Still just end up back on my MBP.

Currently writing away on a Surface Book 2 - and you know what, I like it. It's the nearest thing I've had that would make me switch....But then I've a 32Gb/i9/512Gb MBP on order so yeah.

I have no axe to grind. I'd happily use either Windows or MacOS. I've just found that even allegedly premium Windows laptops from big names like Dell and HP are an absolute lottery In terms of the build quality, reliability, software integration and support.

I'd actually prefer to buy a Windows laptop since it would be cheaper and easier to find one with better specs. Unfortunately my attempts to find a good one haven't gone well to the point I'd rather pay a bit more and go with a MacBook. That's just my experience so yours might be different!

I'm planning on keeping my windows desktop and 12" MacBook a while longer yet but when I upgrade in future I'll probably just buy a MacBook Pro to replace both.

I was like you before where I recommended macbook over windows laptop but after testing out and using the razer blade stealth for a year as my daily driver it matched the macbook-pro

Couple of cons though

  • Not really good battery life
  • Slight longer boot time from sleep
  • Fans kick in when doing some cpu intensive task
  • Can't cope with video encoding and coding at the same time due to 2cores
Pros
  • Nicer screen then the macbook pro 13
  • Better port selection
  • As stable as macbook (I hardly shut down the laptop)
  • Better keyboard then the newer macbook
  • Sleek build and design

I have to echo this too unfortunately. Recently got a top spec Surface Book and my boss (massive Apple fan) said you would be devastated if you bought it with your own money. And I have to agree... My Mac has seen the apple store far too many times though, but at least it works well.

It's good to see the MBP have some more power.

Wait what ? Your apple have been to store plenty of times due to issues I presume and you saying at least it works? Lol

I'm seeing some info around there being a membrane over the keys which may help the sticky key issues. Apple have said it's to reduce noise but I guess it could help prevent ingress of dirt too (which most believe is the cause of the keyboard failures). Time will tell whether it has improved things. Aside from the cost it would mean the only big downside (to me) for the newer MacBooks is the keyboard still feels poor compared to Thinkpads and older MacBooks and the lack of function keys.

The software and hardware works well together. I've had several problems with the wifi adapter and a problem with the keyboard/trackpad. But at least it is designed to work well together. The Surface Book feels so disjointed. A good example of this is, they fitted it with a high res display but Windows does not work well at this resolution and then you connect an external monitor to it and it has no idea what it should do.

It's the integration which is where I see the value of Apple Tax coming in. I currently have a 2013 MBA which is fine, but I want a bit more power and a better screen so I am looking at the 2018 MBP. I am now so used to reliable software now, that I can see the value. Every time I boot my Windows desktop, something kicks off about updating, windows slows down to update, the performance is generally degrading despite barely being used etc.

My MBA is still good and snappy after five years, so I don't mind the Tax for another five years of trouble-free computing (fingers crossed about the keyboard design on the new MBP though).

Cancelled my order for a 13" MBP this morning, going to wait for the next gen Pixelbook instead. I don't use any MacOS apps apart from safari, the built in VPN client and terminal so the whole thing feels a bit pointless for me at the moment. My favourite OS is KDE Neon, there is dedicated hardware for it but it's just a ripoff of the MBA: http://kde.slimbook.es/

I wouldn't mind a blade stealth but there is no way I'd get one unless Neon works perfectly on it.
