*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

I found a new nvme enclosure that is fanless but with a decent fin for cooling which is half the price of the OWC! I can't link but name is.

Hagibis 40Gbps USB4 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure With LED Display USB4 Cable for Thunderbolt 4/3 USB 3.2/3.1/3.0 B+M M-Key SSD Case

Someone posted a speed test, looks good!

Picked up one of these. Although it feels/looks good quality, one of the screws stripped the thread, was only just finger tight so bit disappointing. The other 3 screws seem fine though so shouldn't be an issue hopefully.

Also the included cable is frustrating, got a silly gimmicky power LCD display, which means it is far thicker and blocks one of the three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports in use.

My WD SN570 SSD was previously getting approx 900MB/s read/write in a Sabrent USB enclosure, but now is more like 2600/3000MB/s read/write so a very good improvement for what is a fairly middling/low performance drive.

All told, ok for ~£60 I guess.

I haven't installed mine yet as I am still waiting to get a 4TB NVMe. Good point about the cable now you mention it, it would block the other ports, luckily I have a couple of other 40gbps cables.

edit - just opened the enclosure using my own set of screw driver carefully. The screws are fine on mine, phew!

Be gentle with the screws

Not the end of the world with the cable, but had to get a slightly longer cable to go to my USB switch - the Mac mini is mounted under my desk, so had a 0.3m cable which doesn't reach the front regular USB ports.

Thinking I might modify the under-desk mount design (3d printed) to accommodate the enclosure, thinking it would make quite a big "switch" so I can use my foot to turn on the Mac mini :D

I was lol, VERY carefully.

But for the price though and for the design, no fan, I can't complain. As long as it isn't going to die on me of course!
