The Official 5830 Thread!

It looks like the Sapphire version is the one to have for overclocking: Linky.

I doubt I'll bother overclocking it then, putting an extra 25mhz on the core and 50mhz on the memory just isn't enough for me to bother trying.

I'm fancying a crossfire setup now, although I think I'll need to OC the CPU to stop it bottlenecking, on my 4670 the CPU would only go to 30% load in any game, now it goes to around 60%.

I read an article earlier and forgot to post the link in the first post, where some of the results they were getting showed that 5830s in Crossfire had a scaling of over 100%, and all results were over 90% roughly, so a good one to go for if you fancy crossfire on the cheap. :P

EDIT: I'll run 3Dmark06 tommorrow aswell, it'll be interesting to see how much the rest of the spec effects the score.

3d06 score is more dependant on CPU speed than gfx core/mem speeds.. i get ~24,000 @ 3.2ghz and ~28,000+ @ 3.8ghz, bumping up the core/mem speeds on gfx doesnt affect it anywhere near that amount

I just got just under 17k, everything on stock settings, pretty happy with that really.

Little update for the PowerColor users:

Dear Muel,

If using auto tune in ATIOverdrive in CCC, then it will not void the warranty. If your system became unstable after auto tune, please adjust it back to default speed.

Here you can download the latest driver for 5830, http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx.

Best Regards,
Powercolor

So if you use Autotune, it doesn't void the warrenty. But if you were to set the speeds manually in the same app, would they be able to tell it hasn't been auto-tuned?

I'm still not sure whether to bother, if you can't get to 900/1200 and beyond it seems a bit pointless. :/

I don't really overclock any more, partly because I can only get 12% extra on my CPU and didn't see any real gain overclocking the motherboard, but the last time I did the constant crashing and rebooting ended up corrupting my kernel and giving me radom blue screens when I was back at stock.

I'm more inclined just to leave it and get another at some point and crossfire it.

Well it's looking like I'm going to have to reinstall my OS soon, as I did it a week or so ago to go to a Dual Boot system using 64bit W7 and 32bit XP. It works fine, but W7 definately loads slower than before and I've had a couple of system freezes and hangups. XP was only for a couple of games I can't get to run properly on W7, and I'm not that bothered about losing them.

Think I might have a play with it, just to see what kind of overclock I can get it to before wiping it again.

What kinda test are you talking? I'm not sure on numbers but here are my impressions.

COD4 1920x1200, all settings maxed out. Very smooth gameplay, the occasional lag but it's not like dropping framerates, the screen freezes for upto half a second. This is only very occasional though, the rest of the time I get the impression my 60hz monitor is restricting it.

Crysis Demo 1680x1050 (can't force it to go upto 1920x1200), very good on high settings, and playable at very high but it's only making around 40fps at a rough guess. I run it at medium settings anyway because I can't really see the difference between the textures and it turns off the motion blur.

Ahh that's a right arse! I reckon the RMA rate might be pretty high with these cards, if it's true that they're often made out of fubared 5870s. :(

I's ok Muel I found the problemo!!!! :D

My X-Fi elite card has a little damage on the back. I got it second hand from you know where recently - the darn thing on close inspection has some scratches on the back. None of the traces look cut, but it's enough to have caused some really strange and random hanging behaviour!

It seemed to work ok with the GTX 280 - but since I've pulled the X-Fi, no freezes or post problems.

Good stuff dude, glad to hear it's not RMA time. :P

I'm running the latest drivers, but yeh now you mention it most of the benchmarks around were done on or near release with the old drivers.

I'm seriously thinking about goin CF with mine. There should be a 20-25mm gap between them and I have 2x120mm fans feeding that area, and the 5830 I have will only go to 52C with 33% fan speed, so adding another shouldn't be a problem temperature wise.

Only downside is my motherboard is fairly cheap, and will cut down to PCIEx8. I found this benchmark here which shows that in a lot of situations, x8 and x16 are very close.

BUT they tested with an 8800GTS, so I'm guessing that a 5830 will be throttled more by running at x8.

Decisions decisions!

Aye I just found this.

Test results showed that a PCIe x8 slot provides 4% less performance when using the fastest possible single GPU, and those results did translate into a 4% performance deficit in CrossFire. That 4% loss isn’t horrific, and less powerful cards would likely show less performance difference.

They tested using an i7 1156, i7 1366, and 3 5870s. Basically for 2 5830s there will be no difference between PCIEx8 and PCIEx16.

Maybe it's just because the current drivers didn't support the 5830 when it was brought out, so they modified the current drivers to work on it? And since then an update hasn't been needed with those drivers whilst the others have had 10.3 and 10.4.

Maybe they'll build them in together with these rumored 10.5 drivers. :p

In the mean time, you can get 10.3 to work, and they have attempted to build 5830 support into the 10.4a preview, and failed. (Does install, but doesn't work properly). This tells me though that when 10.4a is officially released that the 5830 will be supported. :)

Just thought I'd run Autotune just to see what happened, watch it get as far as 890mhz on the core and then cancelled it, it was taking too long. :P

Spirits247, is your's overclocked again now you found the issue was the X-FI Elite? Just wondering what I should be aiming for really in case the Autotune goes a bit mad with it...

I must admit, I lol'd at deep breath. :P

It's a very wierd problem that, I've had one or two like that before where I couldn't really trace the cause. I once ended up changing the motherboard, CPU, hard drive and IDE cables just to stop my Windows OS constantly corrupting. I had them spare so it didn't cost me anything. It also worked, which was nice.

Why can't the manufacturers just make things that work. :(

Crysis arrived yesterday! Getting it to run was a right old laugh. I can't get any nocd cracks to work, but it's very fun! Running it at 1920x1200 all settings medium with AA turned off. Might try low settings and experimenting with AA though, things in the distance are often hard to make out, and I believe that's what AA sorts out?

I really fancy going crossfire but I've heard so many stories about issues with rubbish ATI drivers in the past, and seeing as the 5830 is still only on 10.2 I'm not feeling very good about the prospects....

Mind you, if it's true that 10.4a will support the 5830, hopefully all of the little issues wil be ironed out.

I nearly overclocked it earlier, but changed my mind again. I guessed that Autotune would be a load of tripe, and I wan't happy invalidating my warrenty by doing it manually. :P (Although it's not clear whether setting it manually in CCC does actually invalidate warrenty or not).

In a year these will probably be available for £100, so I'll probably get one then for CF.

I've been reading around about this driver issue. The only drivers that officially supports the 5830 are the ones on the ATI site that are seperate in the list. A lot of people have been using 10.3 without an issue though, 10.4 hasn't worked for anyone I've seen comment yet, 10.4a has worked for a few people but it's only a preview at the moment, and I can't find when it should be released in full.

Think mine is borked, having loads of trouble just getting it to run with it in now! Sometimes loads as far as the windows desktop then crashes as the CCC system tray thing is loading.

EDIT: It appears to be sorted now... I put my 4670 in, booted to the desktop with that and surfed the web a bit, then put the 5830 back in and it seems to have not crashed so far! Lesson learnt. Don't take the GPU out, then boot without it in.... (I had to to get at my fan controllers, was setting the fan speeds). My install of Windows isn't all that great though, I'm dual booting XP and W7 and it's given me nothing but trouble so far. When 10.4a are released in full I'll go back to W7 on it's own. (If they officially support the 5830 that is).

Doesn't sound good that mate... :(

Mine's been fine all day apart from I've had two freezes, Windows just freezes up and needs resetting with the reset switch. Once was on loading and I think it was just about to load the CCC system tray thingy, and the second time I was just surfing the net.

It may be issues with the GPU, but I'm having other issues due to this dual boot I'm running. (I think). I've also reset it about 15 times today after having trouble when I took the card out and booted it up, so it may have made my Windows install unstable...

No I don't think I had them before, but as I said this install is a mess, I need to reinstall really.

Just wish I could get a rough date for the release of the next drivers, then I'd do it then!

Same with me, no trouble at all so far today!

I'm feeling certain my trouble lies with my dual boot install. W7 freshly installed with the dual boot loads slower than it did before I reinstalled. Gotta be a sign I suppose. :/
