Hmm... i think what you're talking about, in a round about sort of way, is the inverse square law. As you get further away from an object the light spreads out, so the brightness decreases proportional to the square of the distance. For astronomy, or astrophotography, this means that you have to keep the shutter open for longer to capture enough light to register an image.
 
For the amount of effort i put in, maybe :p

But it's too noisy, not focussed correctly, has a ton of hot pixels and i don't like the colours. Funny though, i think there could actually be some potential in the completely overexposed moon :D

Are both perfectly good beginner scopes. Obviously better capabilities come with increased price, but any of those should be good enough as a beginner scope. I'd tend to stick with dobsonians, easy to set up, easy to use, cheap and stable. Bear in mind that there are some accessories you might want to get, or recommend that she gets; like a collimator or other eyepieces.
