The *Official* Colin Mcrae DiRT Thread

I am really enjoying this game. It just bugs me that it runs so poorly when there are other cars on the track (15-30fps) as opposes to 30+ when I am racing solo or head-to-head.

What res you run at?

With a GTS at 640/2ghz and Dirt at all Ultra, 16xAA/AF, 4x Multisampling, 1440x1050 I got around 30-50fps.

Using 1280x800 but native res for monitor is 1680*1050. Tried the multi car races with the lowest settings possible ie 640*400 and all settings either off or low and I still only get a max of 30. Whereas, with the solo rallies the game flies along at 45+ with med-high settings.

Is everyone getting 30-60 in all races?

Just curious, but why do you need to play this game with high resolutions when you can see it all fine at 1024x768 and get a much better frame rate.

I never did get the whole 'Im running it at 1920 x 1440, 16xAA/AF Ultra settings and im getting 10fps, why, what am i doing wrong?'

Oooo i don't know, what could be wrong?

I get the feeling most people here are more interest in a computer game looking good rather than actually playing it. Like they can't play it until they can get it looking stunning, by which time it's totally unplayable

Then again i guess its all down to, who has the biggest ***k, er i mean framerate ;)

Most people prefer to run games at the monitors native res, for example of I go any lower than my monitors native res of 1440x900, everything looks abit squashed and blury, 1280x1024 is ok apart from things been squashed but I seem to get used to it after a while.

PATCH 1.2:

* Fixed a bug where some saved games were being corrupted during the save process. Saved games are only usable by the PC and user that created them.

i dont get

if i upgrade my pc or change my user name will my save stop working

Update - my copy has now been bayed.

Partly due to frustrating gameplay and handling but chiefly because the Starforce copy protection inhibited my CD and DVD drives from backing up some routine files using the built in XP burner.

Will never knowingly buy another game that uses Starforce protection.

Im having probs with this game specifically. Running fine one second, and then it just stutters like no tomorrow-maing it completely unplayable, in fact sometimes it doesnt let me return to windows.
Im running in 1680*1050 with all eye candy on, but i would have thought with my spec that shouldnt be a problem.
As i have mentioned, its specific to this game only. COH, C&C3, stalker run fine.
Any ideas?
Ta.

forgot to mention im patched to 1.1, and have the recent nvidia drivers 162.22. Running Vista 32bit.

Im having similar problems with it also, but only since I left XP for Vista 32bit. All my other games run ok. Stalker performance is significantly better in Vista over XP for me.
However Dirt is another story, completly unplayable for me in Vista. Very low frame rates even on the lowest details, where as in XP it would run great in High and playable on Ultra settings.
Running 8800 GTX with X2 4200 @ 2.6.
By any chance have you recently switched from XP to Vista? I certainly would'nt go back to XP now, I can live without Dirt, besides im sure it will be a driver issuse and not Vista's fault entirly.

Patched up with 1.2, Im finding the game crashes and gets picked up by my VS2005 after maybe 4 mins. Maybe I need a version of Catalyst later than 6.12.

Edit:
Actually. After further reading about the debugger detection in Starforce drivers, it may be these picking up on the VS debugger. Dont need this. Bye Bye Dirt! :D

I found i had to turn down the saturation a little as it was way too sensitive. Your best bet is to tweak them and see what suits you. :)

Hmmm, dirt was fine yesterday, now today it crashes either loading a race or half way through.

The only difference is i got a few windows updates today, anyone else had this??

I find my comp freezes up upon loading a race. I'm sure it has something to do with that revolving menu interface, that shows you the distanced travelled and average podium finish.
Can't even task manager it!..... it's just a case of holding down the power button and starting again.

Yeah, i get a bit of slowdown when it loads, but now it just freezes when loading or soon after starting a race..... ??

Oh well will worry about it tomorrow now.

Weird, last night mine crashed while loading a race, twice. It had not done that since I first installed it.

Yeah, mines been great up until last night. I can only assume its one of the updates,(I think it was about 8) As thats the only thing thats different from when i played it the day before.

Will try reinstalling the game tonight.

Mine will still not play, the menus and whatnot are fine but just as it is about to finish loading any race it freezes.

I have just patched the game and tried it in safe mode - no joy.

Anyone got any ideas?

If it is a windows update, as was hinted before what can you do about it? The official forums are no use.

Well i reinstalled the game earlier, had a qick few races but didn't have time to play lots, and it seems to have fixed it. *fingers crossed*

Worth a try. :)
