The *Official* Colin Mcrae DiRT Thread

what you mean? when you increased rez did the fps drop with particles at low?

Went up a bit with particles low, but i can't really say it will do that all the time, as everytime i start it for some reason the fps changes, it can either be higher or lower, and thats without me changing any settings, its stupid.

so the demo is pretty much as good as it gets? Not that im complaining too much, i quite like it and have the full game pre ordered. Its a shame it doesnt handle aswell as RBR tho :(

Truly awful controls and handling. I simply cannot get my PS2 controller set up in any way close to acceptable. Couple that with the sledge-like handling and anti-mavity brakes and you've got a lovely-looking game ruined.

Oh, and bring back Nicky Grist, that commentator should have been happy with the cash he got for Burnout.

The handling's a bit weird, but it's better than the last few CM games, though I don't like the trucks, buggys, etc. They just bounce all over the place...

I get around 40-50 FPS with all settings on high, but with the PostProcess fix to get rid of the nasty HDR.

Verdict: Not bad. A definite improvement. The graphics are fantastic, it has the best menus I've ever seen, if they could just sort the handling out it might even beat RBR.

Edit: How the hell are people getting these World Record times though? I'm normally around 10-20 seconds slower, but on a couple I've come within a few seconds of the record.

I beat one of the records by about 30 seconds. This happened completly by accident as I hit a barrier, flipped over it and my car crossed the finishing line on the other side before it reset me to the correct position. It still classed it as having finished the race though!

OK on my 8800GTS SLi I now got avg 25fps with these settings...1900x1200 2xAA everything on Hign with motion blur off.

On the Japan level with same settings it goes down to 12fps

Im thinking it must be something to do with the foilage on that level as it does look pretty intense.

If i whack everything to medium with 1900x1200 2xAA motion blur on it goes up to 35fps avg and 15fps on Japan, so something on that map is a fps killer.

Anyone else had the same?

EDIT: Have now settled for 1900x1200 2xAA Medium settings with everything on. Seems to be the best all round performance for me.

how did you get rid of HDR? i think it would give me a better boost with my 6800 if i didn't have HDR on :(

Copy the contents of this .RAR to C:/Program Files/Codemasters/DiRT/PostProcess and overwrite.

Looks much cleaner and sharper and gives a bit of a performance boost.

Patch v1.1 out:

http://www.codemasters.co.uk/downloads/?downloadid=28894

Description
FIXES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PATCH 1.1:

* Fixed a bug where entering the options menu inside the game with no active sound card present would cause the game to crash.

* The game will now display an error message and prompt the user to quit the game when graphics settings are set beyond their hardware capabilities.

* Fixed an issue where on rare occasions vehicle's bonnets/wings would be invisible on entering a race.

* Corrected the minor miss spelling of Portuguese in the game.

* Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when regaining focus from another application, or the desktop.

* The sound mixer now defaults to SOFTWARE, for improved game performance. D3D and OPENAL are still available, for higher quality.

* Increased maximum Head-cam movement speed by 50%

* 5 axes mode support for Thrustmaster "RGT Force Feedback Pro" wheel

* Fixed a bug where Force Feed Back on controllers would stop working after the user returned focus to the game.

* Fixed a rare bug where it was possible to drive your vehicle before the start lights had gone green.

* Ultra graphic settings modified slightly to be usable with hardware of today.

* Improvements in performance of both internal audio, and external OpenAL drivers
Technical Description

* This patch should be applied to a clean install of the game. If any files in the patch have been modified then the entire patching process could fail. If this happens, we recommend performing an uninstall of the game, choosing to keep the save games and then re-installing.

* Patched and un-patched games will NOT be able to connect to one another in network sessions.

* Following uninstallation of the patched game, there may be some files left in the DiRT™ folder (in addition to the save game file, if that was chosen to be kept). It is perfectly safe to delete these files.

weird isn't it. DiRT's only out today and there's already a patch. TDU has been out for months and Atari still haven't released one (and it really needs one).

Always amazes me, if I look at the list of fixes I always think 'why on earth haven't they discovered those issues when Alpha/Beta testing'

Doesnt fix the bug I have whereas if i change the graphics settings and it says game needs a restart, after the restart the joypad will need recalibration and profile save or it wont respond!

When i first start the demo the main menu freezes for a couple of seconds every now and again, and also when i get into the race when the camera is panning around the car at the start, ive noticed though that when it freezes, my Freezer 7 picks up speed, like my CPU's working harder, and then when it un-freezes it goes back to normal.

Only does it first time i load up the demo though, if i quit the race and go back to the main menu, it all runs fine with no freezes at all after that, its very odd, im still thinking about getting the full game though as i thought the demo ran fine for me.
