The HD7790 1GB replaces the HD7850 1GB as supposedly the memory chips for the latter are not made anymore. It is GCN based(not GCN2.0 based),has some improved efficiency tricks and improved geometry performance over lower cards. In the US,the RRP is $30 less than an HD7850 1GB.

The card is meant to come with a copy of Bioshock Infinite.

Hopefully, reference cards will be a decent amount cheaper in the UK than the HD7850 1GB,otherwise it might not be great value IMHO.

WOW the thing to take away from this is the 7850 is no longer in production. wtf...

the memory chips thing is bizarre. board partners often pick and choose their own memory chips anyway. i've seen hynix, samsung, and elpida ram on radeon 7xxx series non-reference cards, with varying voltages from 1.5v to 1.6v. why couldn't they just use slightly different spec chips...

thanks for the links

The HD7850 2GB is in production, but not the 1GB version.

The Tech Report said:
According to AMD, the 7850 1GB is going away because memory makers have stopped producing the 128MB GDDR5 chips it requires. The card has four 64-bit dual-channel memory controllers that must each be fed by two memory chips; it therefore needs eight 128MB chips to achieve a 1GB capacity. The 7790 doesn't have that problem. With only two 64-bit memory controllers, it can deliver the same 1GB capacity using larger, 256MB GDDR5 chips, which are still being made.

OH. riiiight, that makes sense. haha thanks for clarifying that. well it's good for amd in any case, since nobody buys the 1gb 7850...

I wonder if the same GPU is being used in the next Xbox??

Edit!!

According to vortez the bog standard HD7790 should be around £100. Hopefully this is true!!

Not that I intend to change graphics cards but how do these cards compare to older gen cards such as the 5770, 6770 and the 6850 1gb etc? Any reviews comparing older generation cards at all?

If you want a 2Gb buy a 7850?
Yea but they are £150+. I guess what Greg meant was...weren't we supposed to expect the 7790 1GB at £99 or less, and 2GB version for may be £120? At least that would may be worth "some" consideration toward this card instead of 7850 2GB with it being £30 cheaper...

At the current price point (based on OcUK), they are pretty pointless...and as you say, people would be better off stretching for a 7850 2GB.

From the HC review:

AMD's performance against the current crop of NVIDIA offerings may be impressive but that situation is bound to change very soon. We can't tell you what's in store but let's just say that NVIDIA certainly isn't taking this challenge lying down and is poised to respond with a full scale broadside much sooner than you may think.

The GTX650TI Boost Edition is rumoured to have a 192 bit memory controller too.

So is this pretty much the GPU performance that's supposed to be inside the new Xbox as quite a few people on the tech forums seem to be assuming.

128bit,16 ROPS...pretty poor compared to the PS4 if so.

Exactly this. It seems from Gibbo's post that these are the replacement for the 7850 1GB but seems a daft replacement at the price.

Haha I got a Sapphire 7850 1GB as a replacement for my 5850 so can't complain wonder what I'll get if it breaks in the future though.

So the new 7790 delivers 79% of the performance of the 7850-1GB, for 92% of the price... Well I can see how this is good for people with the exact amount of money a 7790 costs but like most I'm more saddened by the loss of the base 7850 than the arrival of the 7790. Doesn't this now leave AMD wide open for Nvidia to release a "655Ti" or something right between the 7790 and 7850-2GB price points?
