***The Official Home Recording Studio Thread***

Try the PZM on its own in mono. You will be amazed at the sound.

I'm not sure an SM57 on the snare or Bass drum will bring anything to the Table. I have two PZM (Tandy Ones) excellent mics for the price.

I'm not sure why you just dont get a USB audio interface with Two Mic inputs.

Record stereo Overheads and mix and EQ and compress in the box.

Reaper (Free) will be all you need and a laptop :)

Yeah, I've got a Zoom UAC-2 interface with two XLRs, thing is, I don't have a computer at the moment. Hah, my PZM was from Tandy too. :)

I agree that overheads are the most important, but close mic'd snare and bass drum along with the overhead would give better sound, presence, punch and detail, no?

If you have hard flooring the PZM on the floor about 4ft away would be worth a try.

Miking the snare and bass drum directly will give you more options but more faff for what you need.

A single PZM on a kit placed well will give you good results for what you need and that way you dont need to buy a mixer...

Good point. Yeah I have ceramic tiles over a concrete floor. I'm not sure the PZM on its own will give me quite the sound I'm looking for though. I'll try your suggestion of PZM on the floor and I'll close mic the snare with my 57 since I have two XLR inputs.

Did you get your Tune-Bot Studio? :)

I don't think my alerts are working?

I ordered it from Thomann but it was delayed in the post. I cancelled and will have to get around ordering another when work is not so crazy!

Hey guys, I've got a Zoom UAC-2 USB 3.0 audio interface that I bought last year which I never used, I only opened the box, lifted the unit out to look at it and put it back so it's as new. I bought it because it had low latency which I needed for triggering drums. But anyway, I want to sell it. Not on here obviously, just wanted some ideas of a realistic price and then stick it on gumtree.

I see it retails at about £180 and some places over £200. Any idea what I could try to get for mine? I know it sounds a bit tight fisted but I want as much as I can only because I'd like to buy another Zoom product which is nearly £290. Do you think £140 is acceptable?

Not sure you would get that much tbh...maybe 100 ? Put it on for 140 see if you get a nibble

Alright, today I've been annoying my neighbours :D with hitting drums for mic testing. Here's what I've got so far, just snare and kick. All I've done is used the PAD switch on the Q8 to reduce 20dB and messed around with the EQ on my mixer. No compression or anything.

Mixer settings. Bass drum is 2nd channel.

My kitchen is the only room I can use, is untreated and has quite harsh acoustics. Ideally I need to put soft furnishings in it to deaden it more.

How does it sound to you? I notice youtube compression has unfortunately take some of the brightness out.

0 to 0:32 Kick mic but Snare mic off.
Then Snare mic but Kick mic off.

0:33 to 0: 53 Just Zoom Built in XY mics.

0:55 to 1:14 Kick, Snare & Zoom XY mics together.

1:16 to 2:01 with a drumless backing track.

On the plus side, I'm quite happy with how the snare is recording. On the downside, the bass drum sounds utter pants. Got a 57 in there and not sure how to get it to sound better. It's got no guts to it. I've tried positioning it a few times, even sitting just outside the front head.

What mic is on that snare? My SM57's dont look like that?

Yes, I should have mentioned that. It's a Unidyne 3. I swapped them around. 57 was on the snare drum and now in the bass drum. Unidyne 3 was in the bass drum and now on the snare drum. I did it to see if it would help the bass drum but no change. I think the Unidyne 3 sounds a bit more focused on the snare though.

Having watched some videos I think I understand why the bass drum sounds flat. I think it's recording as it should but
I need to add lower frequencies to bring out the low end and give it weight. Not sure how I can do that though. My mixer is very limited with only basic 3 EQ knobs and I'm not using software. Obviously a proper kick mic like a D112 would help but probably not enough to give me that low end. I guess I could try turning on the compression, might help?
I'll also try the microphone in front of the reso head.

Why don't you get a PC and record into MIXBUS and move on with your life :p

I know, I know, and you're right. Yeah, I'll be getting a PC again soon. But I'm nearly there with this little setup so meanwhile I'll see how far I get. :p

Its all fun and games and if you are enjoying it then all is good :)

I'm very impatient. And have fallen under the ugly spell of the paradox of choice. Too many plugins , faff, and bloat :p

Mixbus not only sounds better than any other DAW I have used. Its simple to use and yet hugely powerful it takes the distraction of choice away and makes it very easy to get things sounding great very quickly.

It has changed my life.

Here's today's tests. I think kick is punchier, snare is not so loud and aggressive. What do you think guys?
Close mics only, then plus Zoom mics, then with track.
At the very end, I tested with the compression switch. I think I'm going to have to leave out compression because it's creating weird swishing sounds.

This is my expensive deluxe mic stand :D

Love your Mic stand :D

With backing track the bass drum sounds lost and mushy....

I know it sounds crazy but try that mic on the batter on the bass and stick another mic at the front if you have one....The batter mic for the attack and the the front bass mic for the thud...

Interesting setup. :p The snare sounds really nice.

I'm looking to do something similar for fun (I have the advantage of having a DAW), I've only got 2 inputs.

I was thinking of placing the Slate VMS above the kick shell maybe pointing towards the snare and using my sm7 on the kick (sm57 is the only other mic I have).

Two inputs two mics try Glyn Johns

Well guys, I've decided I'm going to buy a new 8 XLR mixer, probably the Behringer X2222, the Qkick mic set (but probably still use my SM57 for snare) and a pair of cheap overhead condensers, probably the Behringer C2 as they seem pretty decent and only £55 a pair.

Meanwhile, this is the best I can do with what I have so enjoy (or not) a complete song until I get those things. :D

Why not just get an 8 input audio interface ?

Hmm yes, good point! As I'll be doing it with a computer I won't need a mixer. That said, the Behringer X2222 has USB connectivity, so is there any particular benefit of an audio interface v a USB mixer? Which one do you recommend that isn't too pricey? I'm currently trying to sell my 2 input Zoom UAC interface on gumtree but no bites yet.

You won't get 8 indivual tracks recorded with the Behringer...only a stereo one...

Which is poo.

Spend the money on an 8 track interface that allows you to record 8 individual tracks into your daw (mixbus) ;):p:D

This will give you loads of eq and effects options plus you can send the 8 tracks to a drum bus for mixing or applying a smooth tape drive effect of the Classic Harrison consoles :)

That looks great and I know Presonus are respected. It's a little expensive though and was wondering if this would do a decent job? I know Behringer have a bit of bad rep though.

That's not an audio interface it's an adat mic preamp.:p

The personas is near enough x2222 money but blows it away by a million :p

Buy cheap buy twice...

That presonus us is a steal and a top quality unit.
