Apple to release iOS 4.2 at 10 a.m. PT
On Monday, Apple will release iOS 4.2, a free software update that brings the features of iOS 4—including multitasking, fast app switching, and a unified mail inbox—to the iPad for the first time. Apple says the update, which also adds the new AirPrint and AirPlay features to all compatible devices, will be available at approximately 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
How to update
iOS 4.2 is compatible with all existing iOS devices except the original iPhone and first-generation iPod touch. However, some features (such as multitasking) won’t work on older devices, including the iPhone 3G and the second-generation iPod touch.
Once the update is released, users of compatible devices can update by attaching a device to a Mac or PC, selecting it in the iTunes source list, and clicking the Check For Update button. (It’s always a wise idea to let iTunes back up your device before running an iOS update, in case there’s an error that forces you to erase it.) One bit of trivia: the iOS update being released Monday for iPad is actually version 4.2.1, since version 4.2 proper was replaced as a part of this release's development cycle.

As announced on Sept. 1 by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, iOS 4.2 introduces AirPlay, an updated version of Apple’s AirTunes feature that allows iTunes 10 and iOS devices running iOS 4.2 to stream video to a TV via the new Apple TV. (For more details, read our hands-on look at AirPlay.)
The other big feature in 4.2 is AirPrint, which lets iOS devices print directly and wirelessly to a handful of HP ePrint printers. Unfortunately, one of the features originally promised for AirPrint—the ability to use a Mac or PC as an intermediary to print to a wider range of printers—does not appear in the software releases occurring Monday.
When Macworld asked Apple about that missing functionality, a company representative would not comment about the matter directly. Instead, he said: “There are still great features available through apps that allow you to accomplish [some of] that capability. For now, AirPrint is for AirPrint-enabled printers.” (There are numerous iOS apps that enable printing separate from AirPrint; there are also several new Mac apps, including Fingerprint and Printopia, which act as middlemen between an iOS device and a printer.)
Another new feature arriving with iOS 4.2 is the ability for all users to access Find My iPhone, formerly available only to subscribers to Apple’s premium MobileMe service. If you’ve got a device running iOS 4.2, you can use your Apple ID to set up a free MobileMe account with access to the Find My iPhone set of features, with the ability to find an iOS device on a map and remotely lock or wipe that device.
