**The Official iOS 4.2 Thread** (Both recent threads into one)

Right, so only the iPhone 4 and iPad get the free 'Find My iPhone' thing BUT, apparently:
If you can get hold of an iPhone4 or iPad you can get it working on your 3GS.

You just need to go to mail,contacts,calender settings and put your apple ID name & password in and verify.
Then do the same on the 3GS and it'll verify there too.

No custom text tones for 3G and 3GS? Very poor.

I don't use any kind of tones at all but stripping back on older models is a poor attitude for Apple to have.
 
iOS 4.2 (iPhone 4 discussion)

OK so there doesn't seem to be an actual discussion thread up other than 'still downloading' and the usual that comes on OcUK whenever a new firmware version is released, so i thought i'd make one :)

I want some info on what it's like to actually use now because until it's jailbroken and i can use cydia then i'm not getting it so i have no idea! Anyone got the 'find my iPhone' feature up and running yet? Anyone else waiting for it to be jailbroken? And more importantly, how long am i looking at waiting? I hear between 2 hours and 4 weeks - which is a pretty wide range of waiting time.
 
no text tones for 3GS!! Now thats beyond a joke! Apple really are loosing one of their biggest fans here! Whats the coverup reason for that? 3GS cant handle it! ******! same reason they do everything . Sell there next over priced instantly outdated product!
 
Gave up on the download for the phone and got the iPad update instead.
Folders and unified email at last.
Will and see if the iPhone has finally finished downloading.
 
What so you had it on your 3GS before iOS4.2? Also, was there a keynote or anything for this release? Would be interesting to watch as always. Takes me back to iP4 keynote announcement haha. Rushing home from work to stream it :D

I didn't realise iPad's didn't already have folders :S About time we got the ability to create folders for photos/video...

Well it works for me coz Im paying for mobile me. Still no reason why it wouldnt work otherwise. Just another stupid tatic of Apple. I hate a 12 month cycle on products when this is their tatics! Far to much money on devices for a yearly update. 3GS is still amazingly powerful.
 
2 more things (gf has an iPhone4 so i've put 4.2 and played around).

Where the hell in iTunes is there anything about downloading TV series episodes to rent? And also the new text tones are awful. Mine will remain on silent...

I intend to get around this (own a 3GS) by using a tip from another forum; you simply verify your account on either your or someone you know's iPad or iPhone 4, then when you use your 3GS it should still log you in.

I was a bit miffed, but they're all as awful as the ones already on there and nobody will use them anyway. Lterally everyone I know with an iPhone uses 'tritone' and nothing else, it's why whenever you're on the train and it goes off everyone reaches for their pockets lol.

What everyone wants is to use their own sounds like you can with ringtones, but alas, everyone is stuck with either a short list of duff ones, or a slightly longer list of duff ones.

Well its the reason I jailbreak. Its a joke in this day n age you cant change that. Whats even more annoying is that the ability to actually do it is beyond simple. I know they are all gash its just the principle of it. Do Apple really think people will hear a single on of those gash message tones and go " time a 4G

I think if it wasn't possible to jailbreak I would find another device. I think most of use feel a need to make a current product fresh and the only way to do that is to customise.
