**** The Official Note 4 thread ****

What might this help with? Stopping the phone from restarting randomly? Yeah I'm a little worried about turning my phone off most days, so mostly always make sure to stick it on charge before it goes. Have downloaded the app and will see how it goes, cheers.

It should stop it restarting at random and get rid of the other problems. It will use a bit of battery to run but based on my experience not massively.

So far, so good! I left my phone overnight and it hasn't restarted once according to the battery stats. So does this mean its likely the eMMC problem?

Thanks again! Using slightly more battery than usual but it's like it's been given new life.

Sadly yes but if you're lucky you might get months more use from it.

If it does shutdown and you have difficulty restarting then some people have said that putting it in the freezer for a while helps it restart. I'm not sure whether that means putting the phone in or just the battery though.

Surprisingly there's a 217MB update released 18 February for the Note 4. I'm assuming it's the latest security patches.

Oops, edited.

Unusually, it's still showing the security patch level of 1 August 2017 but the kernel build date is now 15 December 2017.

Really glad I fell into this thread. My old Note 4 started having reboots last summer. My daughter had it from me in Jan 2017 and got 5 months of use before the rebooting issues started. Installed this "wake lock" app and its like new again. How long it'll last I don't know but it'll give the Note 4 some more life, especially because it's in good condition.

Mine was in absolutely mint condition and was purchased on release day. I'd given it to my father to use about 5-6 months before it died and even then it was in great nick. Once those reboots started happening, the e_mmc error eventually hit us and I ended up Mazuma Mobiling (as faulty) the best Samsung phone I'd ever used.

In the US Samsung will replace the logic board for $70 and users say the returned phone is like new. Has anyone tried Samsung UK to see if they will repair it for a reasonable price?

been having issues with my note for a year nearly all seemed like the slow death fault as many have had... did a factory reset 2 weeks ago and its 10x better! (should have done it months ago)

Any one used any new or recent ROMs? Been out of the Note 4 loop for a while but getting mine back after a long term loan and fancy making it into a lean and fast spare for home use.

I quite like Resurrection Remix 5.8.5 (Nougat) for the customisation options as well as the snappiness. Version 6.0.0 (Oreo) is out but I'd say isn't good enough yet for daily use.

Update: I installed the final release of RR 5.8.5 and they've managed to screw it by including a setting for the 'Flip View Cover' which can't be changed/turned off/disabled and the update that's supposed to fix it doesn't so if you have a normal flip cover it no longer turns off the screen automatically when closed. Apparently this is also included in the later LineageOS releases for the Note 4 as well. Going back to debloated stock again.

@Big Elf thank you for the suggestion, been a long time since I have used an AOSP ROM :o.

Just got the phone back and have done a factory reset, rooted and cobwebs cleared out. I remember this phone been fast especially after a reset and it still is, but it's almost night and day compared to my Note 8 :p

Anyone with a mmc_fail Note 4 tucked away in a drawer might want to try this

A few people on XDA and Reddit are saying it fixed the problem.

Still using mine and no problems so far but could be useful - I've only skipped through the video/info so I might be restating the obvious but from the looks of what he is doing that suggests the problem is something along the lines of BGA solder failure.

That's what it looks like to me as well. If anyone does try this find another teardown video as the one in the link doesn't emphasise the care needed to remove the screen.

My Note 4s are still fine and I also have a 4 year old Exynos model (N910C) as well which is supposed to be unaffected by the problem.
