Loadsa - just seen the sig - you sell your entire rig or something?

Edit: Erm - it's too late in the day for an April fool isn't it?

i think you're all getting way too wound up about a refresh.. they do it to cars all the time, slightly different interior and some new lights and its a whole new model!

seriously, none of you lot were taken in by it so where's the harm?

The only thing I guess is slightly bothersome is the name change, 8900 would have been a slightly better move like the last time they did this and went from 7800gtx to 7900gtx and 7950gx2, neither of which were a massive move on from their predecessors (or 2 in sli for the gx2)

Just keeping it fresh peeps, if the 8800gtx has been on top for ages, ati come along with something "new" then they have to respond, thats just business.

I'm actually considering selling my GTS 320 for a nice 3870... I won't because I'm lazy, but if somebody made it easy for me I'd do it for the sake of spiting nVidia right about now.

Intel is Nvidia's biggest competitor now and for the future. Nvidia are more worried about Larrabee than AMD's upcoming products. This is evidenced from Nvidia trying to talk down Ray Tracing which Intel is pouring money and research into and not giving Intel the SLi license, etc.

AMD simply aren't competing with Nvidia at the moment. None of their products beat the equivalently priced Nvidia card so why would NV rush GT200 or whatever out the door now? It most probably isn't ready for mass-distribution atm anyway.

Said this before, will say this again- Direct3D 7 (Not DirectX 7, different kettle of fish entirely) under Vista is broken. Has been since launch, no sign of a fix.

Got shot ages ago, as all i use my rig for now is the net, as i got sick of no games to play, as they've dried up now as they keep getting delayed, and i got sick of nothing new card wise as well, sick of them still churning out 8800's from 2006 when were now in 2008, so i said **** this **** and downgraded as its crap.:D

It's a bit mad the way they keep releasing lots of different versions of the same card.

Anyhows my wallet is delighted that I haven't had to buy a new card in a year and a half :)

so after 18 months they aren't ready for mass distribution, when back in the good old days, GPU refreshes came a lot more frequently? then they've gotten lazy, and deserve to be punished, still...

Intel the giant chipset and CPU maker is working its way into the graphics market with larrabee. The future of graphics seems to be limited by how much stuff the CPU can send to the graphics card to be processed.

So the natural progression is to move the GPU closer to the CPU. Hence AMD/ATi's Fusion chip. Then later the GPU and CPU will be as one.

Both Intel and AMD/ATi will have this capability in the future. This is why AMD had to buy ATI, to stay ahead of the game and keep in touch with intel. And this is why some believe Nvidia is gonna sink like the titanic.

i agree very much with the above comment. it might look like ati is far behind but infact there are not all. Maybe in next 18 months or so we will see if NV has come to the end of the line

Har har.

Trusty X1900XTX is still going nicely.

Proper next gen ***

Thats just what im thinking. I too have an X1900XTX, which i bought on first realease, and im still impressed with how its doing after all this time :D

i keep thinking should i upgrade.. but the only thing that doesnt play at its best is crysis... but then nothing much plays crysis at its best :(

I think some of it is down to a hunger to run at high resolutions.

I sold my dell 3007 for a 3008 but these screens were delayed. I bought a 2408 instead because I was fed up of the wait and I'm much happier with how quicker the games run (1920x1200 as a pose to 2560x1600).

The 1280 lot must be living the high life though, I bet the X19XX's still run fine for those resolutions.

I aggree with the monitor thing, the worst thing i did was give my 19" away i cant stand the IQ on my 24" if its not running its native res.
