The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Sounds good.

So the idea is that this is a fun/learning evening and then we'll see where it goes. All welcome.

If we're mainly beginners, then it will be along the lines of a Gamespy flight of familiarisation and ATC speak.

If we're intermediates or advanced, then it will be along the lines of VATSIM flight from eg EGFF to EGPH.

i may venture into the world of online flying. i have a ryanair assesment mid july (eep!), and from what i gather the sim rides go from either liverpool (EGGP) or east mids (EGNX), so i guess it would be good practice. My major problem is that i only have a webcam mike that can echo sometimes. might invest in a headset when i get the chance to get out...

I was in our town centre, and even the cheapy shops sell PC headsets. I have a 'posher' usb one, but picked up two analog plug ones for £3.99 a piece.

I can't comment on real-world flying, but from what I have seen from professional flights on YouTube and on VATSIM, in my humble opinion, the ATC seems spot on.

Finally installed FSX gold again today and i am looking forward to trying to fly my Cessna 152 with my Thrustmaster stick. I am thinking of treating myself to some nice ground textures but i was wondering if someone could give me some advice on which ones out of
GEX, UTX or VFR England pack

What do you think?

GEX works well with UTX. GEX provides the ground environment textures while UTX provides landclass (accurate placement of roads and rivers and the like). They make a nice bundle together.

The VFR stuff is more detailed but really comes into it's own flying low VFR flights. If you are gonna graduate to airliners, then the two mentioned previously would be better.

Another thing to note is that VFR packages can be frame rate killers. I have the VFR London package. It looks great, but is barely playable.

Guys i got a weird problem, basically is sunsets too early in my FSX setup. for example if i set 19.18 local time in fsx its already dark despite the fact it sunsets at 20.18 and theres some light still until 20.48.
Is there anything i can do for this?

Thanks for that Rob much appreciated, i'll have a look around the web and try and find the cheapest place to treat myself to GEX and UTX :) Might even push the boat out and get REX as well all be it after watching a few vids and reading about it im kinda confused to how it works

Are you sure you're picking the right season?

Strange. Not sure then. Using any add ons? I have just gone up from Yeovil at that time on todays date and it was still light.

can you do me a favor, please start a flight at LGTS and set the time at 20:04 and report back if it is night or dusk, because something is very wrong it sunsets at 19:05 and sunrises at 03:05....

20:04 was night. Sorry about the delay. I think it's to do with FSX's abysmal managament of time zones. If you select 20:04 local time, it will select 19:04 GMT. I'm pretty sure Greece is 2 hours ahead of GMT, maybe 3 in summer.

Try selecting the right GMT time, so if it's 20:04 in Greece, try 18:04 in GMT. That puts you in dusk mode. The plane instruments will always show GMT though. However, I'm pretty sure they do in real life to make time tracking easier.

yes Greece is 2 hours ahead, FSX sets it totally wrong...i tried with python3 to edit the timezone.bgl and all i managed was to destroy my fsx installation :D ..oh well time to reinstall...

Deffo your problem. I always set GMT anyway as that's how all the dispatch sheets from my VA give the times. Well, they actually give zulu time, which has taken over from GMT. Times are the same though.

Sorry been a bit busy the last day or so...

This sounds great, a OCUK Vatsim sounds good.

Headset and 'Mumble' Client Installed: Yes
VATSIM registered: Yes

FSX or FS2004:FSX
Ability: Learning again after not flying for 5 years but slowing getting up to speed again. Very much a novice on Vatsim
Availability tomorrow: Can do most nights after 7 is good.

I'm online for a Gamespy or VATSIM flight or just FSX discussion.

I'll hang around for 20 mins on Mumble. If no interest, I'll take my 737-700 elsewhere

I was on but didn't check the forums....:(

I can do next Tuesday, and will possibly loiter tonight.

I ended up doing my IFR from Cardiff to Edinburgh.

Cardiff Radar, London West Control and Edinburgh Radar were all online, so it was just North England, South Scotland I didn't have ATC for. It was a really enjoyable flight.

Yeah I'm about later...
