I'm surprised there has been no interest in the Sony Xperia S. Looks like a nice upgrade from my Xperia X10!

  • Qualcomm MSM8260 chipset with 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Adreno 220 GPU
  • 4.3-inch (720 x 1280) display; PPI of 342 (higher than retina display)
  • 12.1MP Exmor R camera sensor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB memory
  • 1.3MP front camera capable of 720p video
  • HDMI
  • NFC
  • 1750mAh battery
  • Unique design
  • Weighs 144 grams
  • Dimensions of 128 x 64 x 10.6 mm

What's not to like?!

Mmm, might be enough to tempt me away from my recently acquired Play - tbh, having so much fun gaming, that the rest of the phone features have taken a back seat of late !

Still, this fella looks interesting (for when my old hands have cramped up from too much PS1 emulated games).....and I am now SIM-Free so no nasty contract to prevent.....

Anyway - back to the handset - looks really good, albeit I agree that perhaps a little too much non-screen size, and really would haev thought this would debut with ICS  Between this and maybe a SIII, whenever one becomes official :p

Had my reservations about not having ICS on launch but I think it's safe to say this won't be a repeat of the X10. ICS for 2011 Xperia phones is due in March/April and ICS for the Xperia S is due in Q2 (tablets will get it in Feb). I wouldn't think they would make the same mistake again with the Xperias. For one it's much easier to apply updates now.

It's funny how only now phones are coming with screens carrying more/simialr pixels than the Retina display. The iP4 came out 1.5 years ago!

True, Apple did wonders with the iPhone 4. However, the Xperia S is packing higher pixel density at a much bigger screen size (4.3-inches versus 3.5-inches for the iPhone). Can't wait to see how well it looks in the flesh.

Typical I just sprung for a Galaxy Note and then this appears (been using the Xperia X1 since release until now). Tho I went for it due to the 1280x800 screen as for my useage I could do with all the pixels I can get.

Nice! I'm using an Xperia Arc as an interim phone for now and am very happy with it.. especially knowing ICS is coming soon :) . Sony are directly involved with custom ROM dev's on XDA, they're really putting some effort in after the poor show on the X10!

If this is priced competitively with the Galaxy S2 (bearing in mind the S3 might be out by the time this comes out...!) then I'll definitely give it a look .

I think I'll get this, no gorilla glass though which sort have put me off but I'm currently running a nexus with ICS so will be a nice upgrade. Sony seem to be starting to embrace Android well and coming out with half decent hardware now.

It's a good looking phone, however I read that it doesn't use SD cards for the expandable memory... Anyone else read that?

This does look a great phone. As someone who still thinks the retina display is just about the best screen on the market, the lack of SAMOLED doesn't concern me.

First thoughts.

+ Nice, simple and distinct design (minimal use of glossy plastic)
+ 12mp camera looks great (esp that fast capture function, 1.5 seconds from sleep to shot)
+ Great software support and Android UI skin (Hope Sony continue the good work and doesn't mess it up)
+ Dual core scorpion and 1GB is more than fast enough.
+ 4.3" 720p screen (doesn't have the best viewing angles but the rest is spot on)
+ 3.5mm jack is in a decent place :p

- No micro SD card slot.
- No next gen SoC (power consumption and performance)
- Adreno 220 is a bit slow for a 720p screen.
- Sealed 1750mAh battery and a fat body (Razr maxx has a game changing 3300mAh battery in a 8.9mm chassis)
- The whole back cover comes off just for the micro SIM, so you'll probably get a few plastic squeaks and creaks.

Conclusion.
Possibly the best Android all rounder this gen? (SGS2 for gaming, GN for stock OS/support, Razr maxx for battery life/robust design)

I think I'll get this, no gorilla glass though which sort have put me off.

It probably uses something like Dragontail by Asahi Glass (just as good if not better than gorilla glass)

probably swap my gs2 and some money for one of these if i don't get another 4s

good camera and high res screen is just what i need

id be tempted by it, my only concern would be how it feels in the hand, thats where the arc s's ive tried really wherent great, camera button was really stiff and tiny, and the screen had a sharp edge to it on the sides :(

Nice enough design and spec - however I feel there's too much space above and below the screen.
It's only about 6-7mm, the HC/ICS 3 button black bar is just on the picture which makes it look a lot worse than it is. As much as I hate to say it, I'm a real stickler for microSD because I use so many phones and this will annoy me deeply (ICS will arrive, not so worried about that) and I honestly don't get why it's missed on many phones, it's not like the ports cost a lot and this phone has obvious space for it.

NFC permeating through the higher end Android collection slowly I see, wonder when anyone will actually turn it into something useful (E-wallet transactions currently take x4 longer than C&P - trust me, you won't be using it for that for a bit)

The lack of microSD is indeed a bummer, but this may be start of a trend. Obviously the Nexus phones have been the main culprits thus far, so others may follow suit.

Personally though, for me 32GB is enough. I currently use a 16GB card which is about half-filled. Plus with everything moving to the cloud, it may not turn out to be such a big deal. I have all of my music collection on Google Music for example.

It looks fantastic, I love the design and the specs are good too.

Only downer is Gingerbread? Hopefully ICS will be released for it soon.

Should be Q2. Will get a better indication of Sony sticking to their schedule with the release of ICS for tablets next month and ICS for 2011 Xperias in March/April.
