The olympics are class-based

Not really, quite a few local schools don't have access to a tennis court for example and not many have access to decent tracks either.

Well "decent" would be kind of my point, but are there schools where kids don't play tennis at all? Maybe things have changed since I was that age, but tennis was certainly ubiquitous in high school 20-25 years ago.

I went to school in Scotland and at primary or secondary school we didn't go near a tennis court although both schools weren't really focused at all on sports - essentially you played football or you played football if you wanted to do anything associated with the school.

There might have been a cross-country team and there were a few other sports offered in P.E. but the only one that was seriously offered at all was football.

Okay. Hmm, I wonder how representative that is, or whether things have changed since I went to school.

When I was in High School, I would have expected everyone to have played football, tennis, badminton, cricket, rounders, rugby and hockey. Plus on the athletics side: cross country running, high jump, long jump and the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. We also did a small smattering of other things on rare occasions: basketball, softball, indoor hockey, trampolining, a bit of gymnastics, javelin and discus.

I don't believe that the schools I went to were particularly unusual in what they offered, judging by the friends I knew at other schools. The first high school I went to had truly excellent PE teaching, Mr Shaw was honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had; the second high school was a rather different matter but still "taught" a range of sports.
