The Olympics

So the government says, but not according to the public accounts commitee who have calculated that it is already overunning its budget once all costs have been included.

And yes I am aware it is a drop in the ocean in terms of public finances, but 9.3 billion I'm sure could have stopped some services being cut etc. I agree with the point of Labour's disastrous financial management, but the Tories are doing just as bad a job so far.

A one of £9.3bn really couldn't have saved much from being cut, as most of the spending is ongoing.

It really is an insignificant amount of money in the grand scheme of things, given the level of ongoing, year on year liability in the public sector.

People aren't obese because of Mcdonalds, they're obese because they have no self control of how much and how often they eat.

Surely the ease of obtaining these type of foods and what is added to them has some impact on obesity ?

I have been watching a tv program about this and it is quite interesting and surprising how much of the obesity problem is caused by fast food and the ease of obtaining such foods.

You do realise the bid and the quadrupling of the budget from the original estimate happened under the previous government, right?

The current government has delivered an underspend on the budget Labour put into place in 2007...

Nope I don't have a great deal of knowledge on the government. The current government to me seems a bit of a washout and full of bad ideas but that is my very narrow view on things.

Agreed , but every little helps :) .Not looking at the big picture, but that would have saved a heck of a lot of local government jobs for example. I'm just being a scrooge I guess because I've never liked the Olympics. I probably would have been as quiet as a mouse if we had got the world cup

Unfortunatly though it boils down to the amount of food one consumes and how much activity and exercise they do.

However I definatly don't disagree with what you said, everyone knows how expensive it is to buy fruit, vegetables etc versus cheap frozen foods that are full of unwated extras or as we're discussing here, fast food.

If the olympics bring in somewhere in the region of, over, or even a bit lower than the amount spent then it'll be a net positive, as long as the Government spent all the money on UK firms, creating UK jobs, and circulating money in the UK.

If thats the case, we'll basically be getting free or near free sporting venues and some renovations for the cost of some inconvenience for the locals for a time. It's actually a pretty good idea I guess, as long as it pays for itself*.

If it doesn't pay for itself, its a big waste of money and LOL at dolph saying 11billion quid doesn't matter.

* Probably wont, the Government like to mess stuff up.

The Olympics stopped being of importance to sport a long time ago, it is like most other things nowadays, a big advertising campaign.

Hidden behind pointless patriotism, delusion, ignorance, stupidity, narcissism, gullibility...well almost all human inferiorities i suppose.

What it all does is make the games lose what made them important a century ago and again back in ancient times, though less so.

Which is why i simply could not give a damn about it, I would not be surprised if in the next 20 years or so, that a big scandal occurs in the Olympic selection committee or anything to do with it really.

Ironically any advantages for business will be ruined by the very connections from big business (aswell as their proxy connection to government's and innate corruption in both...) to the Olympics, so the argument is null, void and dead.

What's all this nonsense about McDonalds making people fat? Do you think they actively aim to make people fat and die? What utter rubbish.

Too much of anything will make you sick. McDonalds is a MASSIVE global company, the biggest fast food chain in the world, please put things into perspective. Don't try to compare how many people McDonalds has killed with the local chippy at the end of your road.

To be honest if they became fat in the first place, natural selection wont know the difference, not that it's conscious of course.

McDonalds has money, lots of it. It is near the top as one of the biggest companies in the world. They are kindly giving a nice sum towards the Olympics, to make sure the Olympics has a nice budget to work with.

No idea why people are like "oh noes McDonalds are working together with sport!?" - Lets face it, pretty much everyone in the world knows what company McDonalds is, and what food they serve anyway?

Pretty much everyone is stupid though, so i guess it goes hand in hand.

I disagree that junk food isn't addictive. You've also got to factor in that the price and the fact that poor people can often lack the skills to cook balanced meals means that many young people are brought up on this fast food not knowing any differently.

Surely you aren't blaming McDonald's for the social problems in this country? Oh those poor folk, they don't know any better. It's the evil corporations with their addictive cheeseburgers.

I think people should have some self control and responsibility, yes, but you can't put all the blame on individuals. Especially on corporations who have a marketing budget the size of the GDP of small countries and sell a product known to have long term adverse health effects.

The Men who made us fat

This is the program I have been watching about obesity and fast high fat and sugar foods. It is really quite interesting and shows how the food industry has pushed a high fat and sugar diet onto people. There are interviews with Mcdonalds managers saying "That once they have a child hooked they are a customer for life"..

It's quite interesting and worth a watch..
