The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

So I got my xfx rx 480 gtr black couple of weeks back.

Here is some info if anybody is interested:

Stock voltage for stage 6 was 1.16 somehting and for stage 7 1.15 (I find it strange that stage 6 has higher voltage than 7).

At stock the card does not have a problem holding 1338 clock (I heard other cards are not as robust).

Temperature wise it stays just below 70c as stock target is 70c with fan below 2500rpm but in some instances the fan does go above 2500 and becomes audible, I do not really understand why it comes on so strong as the card then cools to 65 and never really goes above 72 at max for a minute and it starts revving up when the card is below 70. I just set target fan to 2250 instead of 3000 and fan noise is never a problem anymore and for normal gaming tempreratures are below 70 (It is running under-voltage for day to day gaming though)

I tried overclocking with 50% power and max voltages but it is not really stable past 1370. Quite disappointing that I can not achieve anything higher stable with max voltage and max power draw. As for memory anything above 2050 gives memory errors in hwinfo (at 2100 couple of them, nothing major and at 2200 thousands and then millions). 2200 and onward is unstable, 2250 immediate crash with max power and votlage, underclocking gpu clocks does not help memory overclock.

In terms of underclocking I managed to set stage 6 to 1.115 and stage 7 to 1.12 and that is the minimum it can go @ 1338, with memory at 0.925. Memory is stable-ish as far as 0.875 but I get couple of errors on hwinfo at that voltage.

All done on the most recent drivers.

Was expecting more of an overclock potential but solid temperatures and quiet once fan is adjusted, holds its clocks so I am happy with it.

Firestrike score at stock is ~13,800
Timespy scroe at stock is ~ 4,250

you can have more oc wait for afterburner update and put the voltage to 1,2+ and you get 1400mhz++

I'm really happy with the temps & performance of my GTR too but my target temp was 60C! The fan was going really nuts until I adjusted the target temp to 70C although it was certainly keeping it to that temp despite the noise. There was a thread on AMD reddit about this where GTR users were all reporting different stock temp targets!

I haven't tried overclocking mine yet. One thing I'm curious about - do the factory overclocked models not require a boosted power target for their overclocks? Just wondering due to the red devil bios limit...

Installed my RX 480 today, latest drivers, full driver clean prior and at varying times through the Heaven benchmark it just restarts my PC, I've got the "compatibility mode" turned on but it hasn't made a blind bit of difference. Anything else I can try before I RMA this POS back to OCUK?

Edit: Not POS card, turns out it's my POS PSU, one of the PCI-E power cables was buggered somehow but switching to the other has got me through a few benches with no problems.

I've got a similar gripe - the fans don't come on while the card is not under load, but when they do come on, they stay on for far too long once the temp has dropped. When I quit Doom the fans often stay at high speeds until the card core temp reaches the low 20s, which is lower than my normal idle temp, but they still keep going for a long time.

Another quirk I've noticed is when you're idling, you still get a fan speed being reported (600-700rpms in Wattman, 19% in GPU-Z) when they are visibly not moving. I know this is intentional for noise reasons but it sort of suggests that the card is reporting false fan speeds to keep the software happy, which makes me doubt whether I'm ever getting a true fan speed reading.

I'm not entirely sure how much of this is down to drivers more than the card. And despite these quirks I am really happy with the card in every way. It's definitely worth the extra tenner over the Sapphire IMO.

Hi guys, I am planing to buy rx 480 nitro and I want to know is it so loud and hot, many people bought it here so what are your user reviews? Also I am wondering what is better for me, 4gb or 8 gb because I am planing on gaming in FHD, so will a faster memory and more vram be better and give me more fps?

Hi

Its as loud as you let it be.

Anything above about 1800 rpm is audible and anything over 2200 is starting to get loud

If you have a case with good air flow then you should be able to limit the fan to 2000 - 2200 and still maintain full 1342mhz clock speed

My case is matx and doesn't get much air so I run it at 1300 mhz so I can keep it quiet

If you aren't comfortable messing about in wattman it has a quiet mode switch that will keep it cool and quiet for you

thanks for the reply, now I have sapphire hd5830 so it will be a huge update when I get it if I get it because shipment dates are more and more delayed(can't order from ocuk because they don't ship to croatia :( )

Has there been any word on Sapphire's Trixx software update?

Wondering if i can adjust the fan ramp up and down speed. It's my only complaint about the Nitro+.

I like the idea of it, but it's way to slow.

Set the minimum fan speed higher

I use 1500 or something like that - not audible for low load but means its a shorter ramp up to full speed

Last night i saw a German retailer selling the 480 Red Devil for (i kid you not) £99,999.99 . Then they had the audacity to charge £6.90 for P+P. At least it was in stock though lol

That sort of behaviour happens all the time on a well known auction site. They don't actually have it in stock, but if anyone is stupid enough to order it and follow through with payment, then they'll bend over backwards to get one at any cost and sell it to you.

OK, that's me got my RX 480 Red Devil. Sign me up please!
