The price of veg?

I also find veg to be the cheapest part of my shop, despite it making up I’ve half of the items. The painful ones for me are coffee (although I buy it online now), dairy as we will always get organic for welfare reasons, oil etc.

My local farm shop was the place to fill up 3 bags for the price of one from the supermarket...Until to cost of living hit and now it is the most expensive :(

Unfortunately the big supermarkets have been mis-represing the true price of veg for ages now - along with other items but I think veg is at the forefront.

I've been on a veg box scheme for best part of 18 years, these ususally cost more as they represent true cost / profit, but even thses have increases with pressures like inflation / fuel / migrant workforce changes etc.

I can only speak for myself, but it's certainly not unreliable and it's extremely cheap.
My lettuces have been decimated by slugs, majority of my carrots haven't grown (either due to slugs or the weather), most of my potatoes have brown spot, and a couple of my cucumber plants have powdery mildew.

Definitely reliable though :D

(On the plus side this year my tomato plants seem to be doing well)

Oh, thats not good :(
My lettuce is doing well (under a cloche), as are beans, courgettes, cucumber, sweetcorn, onions and patty pan squash, and the spuds turned out well and have been steamed, air fried and lobbed in the freezer.

I can't imagine I'm doing anything different to you, unless because mine are in raised beds??
That said, the cucumber plant in the green house is like yours and covered in powdery mildew and the cougettes in there have failed (they seem to do better in the ground).
Toms are going great guns though, and I think it's almost impossible to get those wrong :)

I buy what i can frozen as it saves on waste (cost), any actual waste goes into the compost anyway. Certain produce is just notorious for not lasting very long either, so you just gotta find what works best for you.

Having to wash, blanch, cook, reheat, prep, and tidying up all costs money too, so best not trying to think too much into the cost.

We were talking about this the other day and the subject came up about the quality of a lot of veg and fruit from the lower end supermarkets and how much of it seems poor compared to what is paid and kind of agreed that we would rather pay more for better quality, than save a few £'s and end up with utter crap.

So a complete change to what I wrote a few months ago here and will now be using farm shops more for some of the veg/salad/fruit shop.
