The PS3 is insecure in a neglectful way ... watch out!

I'm sorry but I disagree with all those that said its the OPs fault.

If a 4 year old can hack the system then it is fundamentally flawed. Sony should incorporate much more stringent security measures (actually thinking about it so should MS) to prevent unauthorised purchases.

A 4 year old did not hack the PS3 LOL. This child had open and free access to the fathers main playstation account. If he'd taken some simple rudamentary precautions this would never have happened. This 4 year old would also have had access to some PSN store content that is not appropriate for a kid of that age so a separate locked down account is a must anyway.

It's shocking that the "Require password at checkout" option can be toggled off without having to first input the password. However you'd have to be seriously unlucky for a child to "accidentally" navigate into there to disable it and manage to navigate the store to purchase a game. :p

If you have a pS3 watch out that stuff is not purchased from the store without your consent ... why? Because the security is pants ...

My 4 year old son managed to purchase the GT 5 game for 24.99 (which I already have on disc!) I did have the 'require password for purchase' option to on the last time I used it .... well, it was off when I discovered this and the PS3 will not request a password to change this option or the 'automatically fund wallet' option either therefore the security is rubbish and SONY have thus far refused to refund my money. The irony is that he loves racing games so was this an accident :p

.

EXACTLY same thing happened to me, my son bought some map packs fro game i havn't got ! he only 5 so what could i say.

buy you can change a setting to ask for password at purchase i think

LOok at it from Sonys side - why would they want to make you jump through multiple hoops so they can get their hands on your cash.

If this can all be bypassed by the OPs young un mashing buttons then its not exactly that good.

6 of one and half dozen of the other in my opinion......but now you have a famous 4 year old hax0r ;)

I find it quite hard to believe a 4-year old can turn on the PS3, go to the store, click the game and proceed to purchase the game all at random

My 5 year old plays Burnout Paradise but I always turn on the PS3 and the game and when he is finished he tells me and I shut down.

My partner 5 year old girl. can work all of my consoles. She got her own pc where she can turn on off load up her own games.

Heck I even walked into her room and she had cbeebies website open?????

Now I don't have a PS3 so I cant personally validate this claim. But if this is the case. It is a backdoor and the 4 yo did hack the system to get a game he wanted to play.

Like you said you don't have a PS3. There is individual accounts per person using it. If you are stupid enough to allow your kids to use your main account, then any combination of key presses (no matter how unlikely) can cause problems.

You have Master accounts and Child accounts. I am not sure if the clue is in the name....

holy &%*$, my pet gerbil has just manged to buy super stardust from PSN store

That ain't the half of it. It logged onto the web browser, used your g-mail account and e-mailed me your username and password for PSN. Now I have downloaded Stardust for free :p

True, but the user does have the option to enable password protection which would have been the first thing i'd have done if my kid was using it on a regular basis without supervision.

I'm not gonna protect it from myself! That would be silly as I'd know the password. but I need to stop impulse buys. WHAT DO I DO!?
