The purpose of certain 4x4's?

What is the purpose?

My parents seem to think owning a 4x4 such as a Mitsubishi Warrior is every mans' dream, but I don't see how, it looks quite good, but it's so slow, and it can literally carry less than some estate cars.

So what are they good at? Doing 90mph and it's screaming it's nuts off cause it's top speed is 94mph lol, yet it's got a 2.5L TDi, so surely it should be faster? O_o, it struggles on steep hills such as 10% on a dual carriage way dropping under 60. You'd think it'd pull better on hills?

So what's the point in em? Is it just to cruise around looking "cool", I must admit going through town you do get quite a few looks, maybe it's cause it's got tinted windows lol?

Sorry for this silly post but I'm just curious.

Lolwut, my mum was mad on getting a warrior cause she liked the look so much, but it's just so slow and lower on space, it's only go to chuck crap in the back that would make a car dirty.

I posted about the Ranger Thunder I had a while back, it was awful as a car basic and tacky, the Warrioirs and Hi Luxs are better but they still can't beat a proper 4x4. I found it difficult to get the child seats in the back as the rear is so cramped and then you have no where to put anything else apart from in the rear in the rain unless you have the hard top

We have a few on our shoot which are handy as the dogs, guns and quarry go in the back and 4 of us in the double cab across fields etc but then Range Rovers are better if all you have to carry is guns and cartridges

I see them as bricklayer foreman vehicles as our car park is full of them stickered up with the bricklayers / groundworkers name on them, they are usefull to transport tools and materials in

No lol.

I reckon it'd be cool if it had a V8 in it.

My mum reckons when it snows in Winter we'll be better off with it, I think she has it in mind it will snow again like last year when it was like a ft deep, but that was just a one off I reckon lol, we live in North Yorkshire, hardly Alaska :p

It's mad though, it makes their old Volvo V70 with just a 2.4l engine seem like a supercar, that thing could cruise at 100-110mph like most cars probably could and this things cruising speed is about 50mph :p

I don't really get the 4x4 mentality, though I'm not a hater and do appreciate a good X5 / RR .

I suppose one of the problems is that if you want the 4WD/AWD grip in a generic prestige car the only choice is really an Audi with the Quattro option ticked, or a 4X4. I know loads of people that got 4X4s for the grip but don't give a monkeys about the added ride height!

There's also those that get a 4X4 just for the being bigger than everything else and seeing over queues etc...... great until everyone else does the same then!

Nissan Navara is one I really hate though. **** build quality and purely made to appeal to Chavs. One of my mates in the year below has just gone and bought one, and to be fair he does use it properly, but after all those Chav "Nissan Navara; it gets respect" adverts I can't help but hate it!

small willy syndrome

I should know

My dad's Navara will happily cruise (it has cruise control very handly when off roading  ) at 90mph and theres still more there. Unless you have some sort of weight in the back then it's a little exciting on the corners, especially in the wet...

Edit: He does have a need for it, its not a 4x4 with low profile tyres and blacked out windows.

and the typical drivers cannot drive to save their lives.

the sight of a pncy black pick up truck is as good a sign of impending SPASTICITY than a christian fish

doubled in severity if said driver is female

Should I cross paths with said vehicle I'll often just drive into the nearest house/bush/military minefield/well/river - the chances of me emerging unscathed are much higher

They're just commercialisation of perfectly valid utes. Go to Australia and you will see 4x4s actually being used for what they're made for. Over here they just seem to have developed some unfathomable suburban following.

My uncle has a GL320 CDI Merc. And not once has he taken it off road. Nice car though.

I had a Navara from 04-09 and it was very good to me. Literally not a single fault on it in that time and not a penny spent beyond normal servicing. Depreciated less than many cars would have to.

When I bought it I was doing a lot of mountain boarding and kiting and stuff and it was good to be able to just chuck muddy stuff in the back. By the time I got rid of it, I had a baby and 2 dogs and another baby on the way and it became impractical. Much harder to use with kids than an estate or similar, having to clamber up to get them in and out.

The drive was good for what it was. Certainly no problems pulling up hill and very happy cruising on the motorway. I had no unrealistic expectations of performance though. It was a truck.

As for chavvy, well I suppose if you have it as a pose, with blacked out windows etc. it probably is. If it is just a tool, then I think not.
