The question that shouldn't be asked: 5D MKIII or D800 for me

Because it feels so nice when you touch a cold metal barrel....

Okay this last line of reasoning has made me realise I'm in no state to be considering moving back to Canon and just saving up for proper primes...

Still. I don't look at the D800 and think "wow, I'm glad I dropped £2k on that", I don't know what I was expecting really... I mean I expected the files which are stunning, that's lived up to it. But there's just something about the package overall. Maybe I'll get used to it and I was just more used to the 5D when I jumped to the D800 than I was used to the D5000 before the 5D... idk, I'll see. Probably need to make a decision before I put my entire Canon setup up for auction.

Classic case of buyers remorse, we all get it when we drop a large sum of cash on something and you dropped a massive sum! I'm still debating if buying my 5D mkii last summer was the right move when surely I would have been just as happy with a second hand 50D and a 17-55mm f2.8!

Shift all that Canon gear asap so it's not still tempting you, stick with what you've got, try to stop thinking about it and just enjoy taking pictures afterall that what you got the thing for!

I'm glad i had that little play on the D800e to scratch that itch i had about it. After using it for a week i'm going to stay Canon and get a 5DIII in the future. As you say, the files were great but there was just something about the whole camera that wasn't a joy to use.

I much preferred the 5DIII when i played with that for a week also.

It's ultimately this that stops me jumping ship. Whilst there are improvements there isn't anything that I absolutely need and that would make any of my shots visibly better in a grin inducing way. Although of course having new toys to play with is always great... :D

The Nikon 50mm f1.4 and f1.8 are better than the sigma, same at 85mm (but the the Nikon 85mm f1.8 is better optically than the f1.4G anyway).

Wouldn't know. I was talking about Canon stuff :) I've never used anything Nikon.

I had a Nikon for a while after jumping from Canon and it always felt backwards to me, the way lenses mount, dials turn, button placement even after a year I'd still turn the lens the wrong way to mount it. I guess I'm just wired for Canon.

Interesting thread, I think it shouldn't be overlooked what someone feels comfortable with as one of the most important factors. At the end of the day they are both tools to deliver a great image. Both are extremely capable of that.

Delivering that great image requires the photographer to work comfortably and intuitively.
Best not to get hung up on the finer technical points......

I came from Nikon film and D70 to a 5Dc and struggled with the feel and change in controls to start with....... But now despite having adapted and it having a better spec I actualy prefer to use my Contax N Digital to the 5D. Why ? The use and controls and the way it feels and operates for me is more pleasurable and intuitive.
Buy with the heart, the brain will not be dissapointed with either.
