Thanks, £300 is less than I thought it would be so I'll start by looking into getting the parts for the Prusa Mendel. I remember looking atthe reprap forum a few months back but found there to be almost too many sections and different models so I found it a little overwhelming. Now I know where to start I'll have a look into this model and give it a go when I get the time. :)

Sensory Networks Nodalcore C-Series 1000

Had this from a Mcafee sourced Dell 1850 for quite a while now.
Can't bring myself to throw it away, purely because I don't know what it is... :D

What port is it on the backplate? Looks kinda like a - wait thats not even a port? :o and wtf does it have its own cmos battery? XD - researched that sensory networks place that's on the heat-sink, seems they do AV and security? perhaps its some ancient security peripheral?

It seems to have an array of LEDs on the back and a CPU on the card, probably a FPGA of some sort. The PLX chip is a PCI bridge to handle communication between the PCI bus and the on-board CPU. The other chips are more than likely memory/RAM.
