Ok I'm toying with a move of job to the Reading area and im trying to price up a flat, say around 185k. Thing is i dont know the area at all. Wheres good? Where is scummy? Work would be just off the M4 so around Reading would work as well.

I'm looking a general heads up on the area really and its always best to ask someone who lives there but isnt trying to get me to come and work for them...

My ex lives in the Tilehurst area, and it always seemed to be a nice area to me, and she said it was the nicest part of Reading. I say nicest, she thinks Reading is scabby as a whole though :p

Reading itself is fairly nasty. OK for shopping and going out in, not for living.

Have a look around in the countryside nearby, virtually all of the surrounding villiages and towns are fairly nice. You *may* get a small flat in henley-on-thames and immediate surrounding area for that money too :)

**** off, Eastern Lower Earley is awesome so stuff you Mr 'I'm too good for Reading', never had a problem in my life here. Cheeky scamps... :o . I'd say stay away from Cemetery Junction, Whitley and Oxford Road personally, also Tilehurst is NOT the best part of Reading, in fact it's pretty rubbish. :p

jeez you guys come from gated communities or something?

Lived in reading 3 years and I think its pretty good, never had any trouble and I lived 5mins from cemetary junction (palmer park). Don't see where reading gets its rep from.

I mean Cemetary Junction has a reputation for being bad (as stated by me above) but I play down at Palmer Park all the time and have never had problems ever. Also I've never thought of Reading as bad... Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and even London are surely worse?

Where exactly are you working? Wokinghams quite nice (I live fairly near) but it may be slightly too far out. Twyford and Shinfield are other possible places.

I'm fed up with people bad-mouthing Reading. As a lifelong resident i'm sure i have just a little bias but it really is a great place to live.

People are naming all these no-go areas and its utter rubbish. Just be a little streetwise and you will have no problem in any part of Reading. Just because some yoot robbed your Nokia one time doesnt mean its some crime-hole. Its a fact of urban living. These whiney little pussies need to toughen the **** up.

As for places to live there are a glut of apartment blocks going up all the time so theres no lack of choice. The best locations IMO are Caversham Heights and the University Area.

If you see any places you like then post them up and im sure one of us helpful lot will be very happy to tell you in detail about the local area.

Lower early is just a huge housing estate of soulless 80's and 90's dross. Its not nasty, but its not exactly a nice place, there is an asda there for christ sake, asda's are only built in area's with suitable clientele ;) (joke)

I'd check out surrounding area's rather than reading itself. £18xk will buy a flat in nicer area's than early. He can do better than reading town.

It's all about size and you get good places and bad places everywhere, there's a lot of Leeds I'd never live in/get out of my car in lol, but North North Leeds is where it's at :p

Leeds fest vs Reading - I'd go to Leeds ;)

So you're bad mouthing where I live... AND WHERE I WORK?! How dare you. :p

I know Lower Earley is the biggest government built housing area in the entirety of Europe but that doesn't detract from its status as a safe place to live. We don't get Chavs, ****** visit rarely and it's conveniently close to Reading town center, what more could you want?

Perhaps my vision is skewed because I live in the (relatively) posh bit. :p

I lived in Reading for a year. It's not a bad place in general it's just the rep of some areas spoils it for the rest.

A mate used to live in Twyford. It's a nice wee village but a bit on the quiet side. The bonus is that it is on the railway line and is 2 stops (IIRC) from Reading.

Ooh we have another Wokingham resident here. Whereabouts do you live?

One stop old chap and it's a town not a village ;)

I live in Reading now as I work in Whitchurch Hill near Pangbourne. £185k won't get much around here :(

Just looking for a new place to move into now as I move out my current place in september. Im living opposite the oracle at the moment in a flat on the river, very handy for nights out.

Must admit though its a bit scabby in some of the surrounding areas
