The Reading area - where to live.

Ooh we have another Wokingham resident here. Whereabouts do you live?

Just outside a village called Hurst about 5 mins away. It's basically inbetween Wokingham and Twyford (although I'm sure you've heard of it).

I live in Reading, right in the middle of the town centre above a shop.

I love the place, went to Uni here and haven't got round to leaving yet.

I'd recommend crowthorne, which is a half hour commute into Reading. It's very nice and quiet, but very expensive.

Wokingham is nice too.

Still we're moving down to the Isle of Wight in a couple of weeks :)

Didn't realise there are so many people from Reading on here. I don't live in Reading personally but only a few miles out.

My bit of advice is to avoid the Oxford Road. Henley-on-Thames (where I work and is not too far from Reading) is really nice but very expensive.

I live in tilehurst so im gonna be biased but Tilehurst really is the best place in Reading imo. got the right balance of accesibilty and infrastructure without being in the middle of town.

Woodly is okay. Thatcham or Theale are nice but not really flat-esc areas.

avoid Whitley at all costs. Seriously just avoid.

Early is okay but wouldnt be my prefrence.

Caversham looks all well and good but its not a nice place to live. Stay on the town center side of the river imo

The oxford road is actualy not that bad.. its just the roads off of it up near the town center that are rough. places like zin-zan street etc. but the tilehurst end of the oxford road is fine.

I work at Gerrads Cross sometimes, the houses there are unreal.

Unfortunatly i dont have about 1 million quid to spend on a house. My uncle lives there but its kinda out of my price range.

Looking at 2 bedroom flats on rightmove the choice is quite wide. how far out of reading is still within a 30ish min drive to J11 on the m4 in morning? Everyone i know says the traffic on a morning if insane but again these are the same people who told me living in reading was like living in the green zone.

I moved to Reading a few weeks ago, near The Oracle.
Its pretty cool but I haven't really had time to look around properly.
Some parts of Oxford Road look abit dodgy I must admit.

Aint that the truth.

I live in Reading now as I work in Whitchurch Hill near Pangbourne. £185k won't get much around here :(

Just looking for a new place to move into now as I move out my current place in september. Im living opposite the oracle at the moment in a flat on the river, very handy for nights out.

Must admit though its a bit scabby in some of the surrounding areas

Oh blimey , that is your "oh so famous" car ive seen around then :p . Small world indeed, never realised it was you.

My ex lives in the Tilehurst area, and it always seemed to be a nice area to me, and she said it was the nicest part of Reading. I say nicest, she thinks Reading is scabby as a whole though :p

Go on, give us a name , ten to one that i know her.. lol

As for Reading, it isnt that bad. Just aviod the things you would normally avoid in an urban area, you know silly things like dont go out alone at 1 in the morning in the middle of a back alley.

Other than that it should be fine. Ive lived in tilehurst , it isnt that bad - just certain roads to avoid - ask if you must know. I know live in purley on thames, 30 seconds outside tilehurst, nice little village, if not a tad expensive.

If you find a place in Reading , make sure to tell us where!

Lived in Reading for 22 years before moving out to Thatcham when i bought my first house.

I was on the Fords Farm Estate, its a nice place to live at the top end, and it used to get a bit dodgy towards the middle of the estate, but they have levelled the dodgy old shops and are regenerating the area. It looks a lot nicer down there now.

Thatcham is where i am now, and its really nice, quiet, good links to reading by train/road and there are lots of new houses around :) I commute daily to the town centre.

Reading and the surrounding area is like anywhere else, good and bad, just start looking at houses you like and get a feel for each area as you visit. Its the only way to do it really.

Where you going to be working? Once you hit the IDR its pretty clear if you are heading towards Caversham. From J11 it is a nightmare on a saturday, there again driving in Reading on a saturday is a pretty stupid idea.

Took me 1 hour to get from TVP to my flat one saturday. You can walk it in 30mins :(

Mandela Court in Reading is a nice place to live.

I used to live next to Mandela Court, the estate just down from the canal to it, big mistake. Only time I have ever seen some one chase another person with a kitchen knife and no one batted an eyelid.

Anyway now live at Cemetery junction which is actually very nice.

Pfft... Caversham is a great place to live, we try and keep all the undesirables on the south side of the river although granted Tilehurst does give you easy access to the Oxford road/West Reading drug dealers and hookers. :p

Living in Woodley myself at the moment, but moving into an Apartment in RG1 just across from the Oracle in October.

Oxford road is best to stay away from unless you like prostitutes and class A's.

But Reading centre is quite cool.

:)

Im there! :p

There's nothing wrong with the Oxford Road, I lived on George Street (just off the Oxford Road) for 3 years and saw no incidents... There are drug dealers / hookers etc, but not that much more than anywhere else in Reading.

As I said (a few times), the Oxford Road area is getting revamped fairly soon, and as the Reading town centre spreads outwards, the house prices in that area will get a lot higher, IMO the place to buy in Reading at the moment.

Reading is not detroit yet people!

I will happily walk the areas mentioned throughout this thread, and i do frequently.

Really, there is nothing wrong with most of the places in Reading. Towards the top, and bottom of the oxford road is prefferable to the middle, but otherwise its not like your moving to Iraq?
