According to sources - accuracy unknown - the Russians are developing a new interceptor initially dubbed MiG 41.

It is suggested that it will have a top speed in excess of mach 4 which would surpass even that of the SR-71 and if there is any truth in it, you have to wonder what the US may develop to counter ? Cold War

What say jet fans ?

More hits on Google.

I'm surprised they see the need for a high altitude/high speed interceptor, considering that the us fleet consists of aircraft operating at normal altitudes with more of a focus on stealth technology. Iirc even the sr71 has been retired and satellites have taken over the role of photo reconnaissance.

Interestingly, it seems to be based off the frame of a mig 31, so it will be a gen4++ aircraft, not a gen 5. Also, I wonder what the full scope of this project is as I thought mig were losing out on contracts to the other major russian players - sukhoi in particular.

Its probably some Oligarch stretching his desire for some pointless crap...Looks like Russia is once again making the same mistake they did running up to the collapse.

Amusing...all the while the West concentrate on "Massive Assured Dominance", through the science of choice based intelligence in drone warfare, looks like we are heading for a wonderful trope of technology vs grunt.

Images are sci-fi fan art.

I'm no sceptic but I'm pretty sure IronWarriors battleship anime girls aren't real and there's models of those so already more credible.

I'm no designer but I'm not convinced that a MiG 31 base can produce a 4++ fighter/ interceptor. Such an aircraft would be from scratch surely ?

As for Sukhoi, isn't the PAK-50 not too far from entering service ? It will be interesting to see what it can do seeing as the SU-27 was performing manoeuvres in the late 80s that no western fighter could match.

If like the film you have to think like a Russian to pilot it they will all be flown into a truck head on while bladdered on Vodka according to many short documentaries I've seen on the Internet.

I still hold out hope that the USAF goes ahead and commissions the B-1R upgrade, the great thing is the B-1B is known as the 'BONE' the 'R' would be the 'BONER'.

On the subject of jets though, anyone have any opinions on what came of the USAF Aurora?

Skunk Works are working on the SR-71's succesor, the SR-72. I'm guessing that quite a few of the Aurora reports were something to do with that.
