Hi all

Just watching the above on 115 (Sky) BBC Three and they showed how easy it is to get into a WEP wireless network even with security passwords..

How many of you are on WPA?

I for one have been for quite a while now, but I imagine a fair few aren't either due to hardware restrictions or other reasons??

Whats the general opinion?

I run no security, just because theres no need to when there closest house is 200m give or take away.

But yea, WEP isn't worth the pixels I just typed it with. (Or something like that)

So whats to stop someone pulling up outside your place with a lappy and jumping on the network?

The 100m driveway, aswell as several dogs alerting me to their presence, to which I politely go outside and tell them to get of me land. :P

Disabling SSID and using MAC filtering is pointless, WPA on it's own will do the job, and if they get past that (takes me 11 mins), there's no point in even bothering with the others :p WPA2/TKIP/AES is where it's at :).

Nothing.

A directional antenna will fix that ;). TBH, the only secure way is fibre or cat :).

So you expect someone to sit on a B road using a laptop?

Also, I think it would class as being illegally parked being within 10m of a junction. :)

Right yah, cause they're illegally hacking into you're network, they're going to be worried about being illegally parked? :\

You'd be suprised what some people get up to.

Technically, as its open they wouldn't be hacking. :)

tbh, I really don't think most people know theres even a house there, and its not the best place to go hunting for wireless networks, Hythe/Ashford/Folkestone = much better, and have parking next to the houses. ;)

I know that, but still it's better to have it enabled than not.

Ive been on WPA and the connected can drop out, go uber slow (8kbs) And take 10years to load.

Ive just tried WEP and im downloading full speed on wireless, no laggy webpages.

Only other network i pick up is a sky broadband (next door i think)

Dont think i got much to worry about, think i can safely stay on WEP without worry. I think im prob only guy with broaband close by.

How did they break into WEP btw? And what can they do if someone happens to get through to my laptop? I only have a couple of files i share to my pc (few songs) Nothing else is shared.

Edit - Why would my internet be so poor on WPA anyway?

No it's not.

It just takes an awful lot of faffing about to setup, then anyone determined enough to attempt to hack into your network will get past a hidden SSID / MAC filter list in a matter of seconds...

Lol your kidding right?

10 mins to set-up for me and I'm not the fastest typer?

In what way are you better off not having it? It only takes a matter of seconds to set up anyway.

Personally i think my method of security is great.

WPA is a definite, but then when i'm not on the PC i turn the modem and access point off, saves energy kids and no wireless hacker would put up with the service turning off for hours at a time, nothing through the day while i'm at work, then non stop drop outs when i make my dinner and go to watch tv :p

Faultless i tell yah...

...of course it only works because i live on my own :p
