the rebuild/upgrade : take 1

Just a reminder, a Q6600 with a badly fitted CPU cooler will hit max temp and shut down pretty quickly. Double/triple check the cooler is seated ok.

little bit of a update ready for the weekend, this week im going to concentrate on the cable management a bit, decided that with the hard drives the best way to get the cables tidy would be to cut two holes in the floor of where the drive tower is in the case and invert my hard drives so i can have the connectors facing down and then i can run the cables under the bottom of the platform and should be able to hide the wires, might not have explained myself very good then :D well be doing other cuts to the case aswel, for example there is a hole cut as standard on the platform above the psu, i will be extending it to allow a better direction for the 4 pin motherboard power connector to get to the motherboard. sounds like a lot of work however i think i can get it done this weekend :) expect some pics to hopefully show the design better than i explained it :P

lack of pictures from last weekend as there was not much done, sanded the whole case down ready for another coat of paint, ordered more braiding, mosfet and SB cooling and some more thermal paste, hopefully when all this stuff arrives i can do a big update as im looking to

[1] finish off the case, painting, stand off mounts and front panel cables braided
[2] transfer current equipment over to new case
[3] most probably find something else that will take up most my time

so looking to do a bulk update mid week next :)

@fonetech - i find that you know if you done a good job because your covered in more paint than what you were painting ;)

well i been fiddling about a bit with the case and got a bit done and a small set back :(

i gave the panels, and the main body of the case a final coat of clear laquer, after i sorted out a bit of a problem with the paint on one of the panels.

once that was done i moved on to the rear I/O panel. i want to make the rear of the case as minimalist as possible in reguards to colour, so i sprayed the panel black and a really good thing about the backplate on the P5K-E is that the "which hole is for what input" bit is pressed in to the plate, so even when sprayed black, you can still see the writing on back.

next on my list to do was finish off some of the wiring, im still waiting for the last bit of my kit to finish off braiding anything i can :) so the front panel audio/firewire/usb is on hold however the activity lights and power switch have been finished. so i put the lights and switch back in, looking pretty good if i may say so myself!

however!!!!! whilst trying to route the wires to make sure everything was tidy tidy the wires connected to the vandal switch! which was a bummer so i suppose i will have to learn to re-connect that soon.

hopefully should start recieving some of the cooling stuff next week, so i will start putting the motherboard in soon followed by making the side panels whole again and installing the fans

but the best news is its taking shape now :)

few chanegs have a risen :D going to replace the standard vandel switch for a black with white ring and also thinking about some led white lights under the motherboard, but the later will be down to my electronic skillzzzzz that dont exist :P

just had my new arrivals today, apart from tonnes and tonnes of braiding stuff i also had theses delivered

first impressions are good, quite heavy but very cold to touch which is good :D

just got to finish the rest of the project off :)

managed to spare a few hours this evening to have a fiddle with my hard drives and also my dvd drive. as you can see from the pic, plain harddrive, remove sticky labels as they are out of warrenty anyway

a few measurements, a few cuts and DA DAH! you will notice the bubbles and a fold on the drive, that was pre-pushing them all out which took forever!

like i said before i want to run my harddrives inverted so that i can run the cables from them under the platform in the case to make as many cables invisible as possible, however i did confuse a few people so i made a mock up photo of what it will look like when it is set up.
