Right a few tips from me, with what I have just read. I used to be in the top 200 of universe 2, with just over 100k points.
First of all, protect your fleets! When you build a sizeable fleet (read: one that cost you MILLIONS) you want to save it so no one comes along and totally destroys it, then sending recyclers to your planet to clear debris from the battle. To save yourself, every night or whatever, work out how much time you are going to be offline. Get one recycler at least. Pick a debris field in your solar system, as long as it is not on the planet your fleet currently is. Change the speed from 100% down to a value low enough that the fleet is gone until you come back. So if you are going to sleep, and then to work, and you are to be gone, say 16 hours, time it so that your fleet takes an 8 hours journey so it is back at the same time you are.
Second tip: RAID, RAID, RAID.
Raiding is a part of the game. As soon as you can afford espionage probes and cargo ships, spy on people by looking at them through your galaxy screen. You might need to send more espionage probes to find more information. This process can be a bit tedious, but it is necessary to find good targets to raid and steal from. Finding planets with no defense nor fleet to protect it is great. You can then send a cargo out (or more, depending on how much resource is present on his planet) to grab. If the target has a defense, try to see if you can take it out with little or no losses with cargos. One good program to use to work out whether your fleet will win or not is Speedsim (google it).
Third tip: DO NOT MAKE YOURSELF A TARGET!
Never leave substantial amounts of resources undefended, or poorly defended. Never leave large fleets idle unless you are there. Never give someone an excuse to attack you. If you don't have anything to steal, or no fleet to crash and then recycle on the planet, then you are not interesting, and thus you will be free of enemy attacks.
If you are under attack, don't panic. Something on your planet attracted an unfriendly person. Get rid of that thing. If you have cargos on your planet, fill them up with every single resource on your planet and send them to another planet of yours. Make sure your attacking fleet goes too, the attacker might simply be trying to kill your fleet and recycle it for resource - remember that a debris field is 30% of all destroyed ships. So a single battleship, costing 40k metal and 20k crystal will leave behind 12k metal and 6k crystal, and that is just one battleship. When there is nothing of interest, send a message to the attacker. DO NOT make rude comments or anything of the kind, as the attacker can get you banned just like these here forums, difference is that if he gets you banned, you won't be able to get your fleet back off your planets for another 24 hours, which is more than enough time to annihilate you and steal everything. If you are nice, you might get the guy to quit attacking you, for he'll see you are no longer an interesting target. Sure, he'll spy on you again, but as long as you aren't of interest, he won't attack.
Another tip, as soon as you can make a colony ship, get eight colonies, the maximum. Place them in areas where you can get large colonies, positions 4 to 9 of a solar system are good for this. Position 15 is also pretty good for deuterium as you can mine more in the colder planets. Also, the closer your planet is to position 1, the more effective your solar satellites (NOT PLANTS) will become. If you get a colony that is less than 150 fields, delete it. It will not be worth it as your colony won't be big enough in the long run.
You will only need one research lab, and that is on your main planet. You will need a ship yard of a decent level on every single planet so you can build ships and, maybe more importantly, defense there.
As for research: Remember research costs double with each level. Level 3 computer tech costs twice as much as level 2, which costs twice as much as level 1, and so on. At high levels, research can become incredibly expensive. However, don't research more than is necessary. Technologies such as Ion, plasma, energy, lasers, and hyperspace don't need to go very high, they simply unlock other technologies (check the technology tree). However constant investment in other technologies like armor, shielding, weapons, espionage, and the three different engine types is recommended - if you can afford it.
That is all I can think of for now. As I said, you can email me (check my trust) with any other questions, or questions about this particular post, considering I probably didn't write it in a newbie-friendly way
Good luck people.
