The return of customer cars?

Funny how the dwarf pushes for cost cutting yet expects teams to supply customer cars at the same time. Ignore it, it's going nowhere.

It's got your boss in a room with a bunch of other team principles discussing how to control costs though, hasn't it ;)

So the Sky piece about teams talking self governing cost controls and Monishas interview about how they need to look at stopping costs getting out of control was all made up?

You said my boss was in there talking about how to cost cut, why do you think the 2 teams who have not signed up are Red Bull and Torro Rosso? we might sign but, i would be suprised if its this year.

Want to make a small fortune from F1? Start with a big one :D

oh and as for ferrari waving the cost cutting banner, how much do you imagine they spent dragging that dog of a car upto where it is now and already developing a car based on the 1.6 turbo config. Dont believe 5% of what you read.

The Sky piece included footage of Horner and others, so implied he was involved.

But either way, I agree with you, it won't happen. But something will. It's textbook Bernie negotiations: suggest something wildly beyond what you actually want, and then get agreement on a middle ground which is what u wanted in the first place ;)

I don't think anyone can deny that F1 needs to keep a lid on costs. The big budget manufacturer days are gone, we can't afford to drive teams away through spiralling costs.

Ah, while I think of it Sparky, are you able to shed any light on how much the 1.6l engines are likely to cost?

Everyone keeps banging on about how the teams are complaining that the 1.6 engines will be too expensive, but I've not actually seen anyone report on how much they are actually going to cost?

Its the development costs, from what Renault have said, to get a level of performance from a 1.6 turbo charged unit that will meet upto what your average joe expects from F1 is horrendous. The tooling cost alone are scary, so much for cost cutting!

But surely the costs of developing the current V8s were passed on to the customers? And the V10s before that? It's not like this is the first time the manufacturers have ever had to design a new spec engine, and the first time all the customer teams have ever had to buy them.

Not to mention the number of engines needed is drastically less. McNish said in 2002 Toyota were going through 400 engines a year!

Maybe everyone has got complacent with the current frozen engines, but personally I don't buy it. I think the teams are just against the 1.6s as a whole and are using the cost as an excuse.

Let us know how much they have spent compared to say Red Bull?

They have to develop a car round the new engine no? Not like they are going to buy an engine from Renault are they....

I will let the lads who are already working 60 hours a week know your feelings :p

I don't get this, surely the top 4 teams are bigger in numbers than the early 90's and they used to build far more cars then with fewer people.

Not only that but if for example Red Bull can sell two off the shelf chassis for 10 million you would just employ the extra numbers to make this a worth while money making exercise?

You would just be supplying a line of old parts anyway and making decent money for it.

Are you able to say what you do with your previous year tubs? Given the new nose rules this year, its going to be drastically different, but I guess they change year on year in some way anyway?

Sell the fabrication designs to the previous year's front / rear wing (and any spares original team has that cant use if rules have changed)

Im sure :D

edit - anyway RB have been selling a customer car (the chassis at least) for a number of years anyway, whats the difference?(admittedly without the "support" element to a customer deal)
