The Revenant

Just watched it, best film for this Oscar season for me. I didn't enjoy it as much as Mad Max or even The Martian but it's just an incredible movie, with characters that I cared about.

Still need to see the Big Short, Brooklyn, Room and Spotlight before the awards.

I meant maybe his dead wife was powaqa. I didn't notice that it was the girl with them at the end.

Why the hell didn't they help him then? He clearly seems more at home with the native americans than the white folk.

She had a fairly distinctive tattoo on her face to identify her. They helped him by not killing him, remember these are the same natives that were attacking everyone, including Glass when on his own, throughout the whole movie.

Back from watching it.. I wasn't overly impressed. thought it was too long and at times a bit boring.. Some great scenes defiantly but a great movie.. not in my eyes.

First film I've watched in a while that I've felt uncomfy watching at points. I'm surprised it only got a 15 rating with some of the more brutal things that happen in the film.

Cinematography was good and they took advantage with the backdrop for some beautiful shots. Hardy was brilliant and really made you hate him and DiCaprio was equally as good and you really root for him to get revenge. For this I would give the movie 9/10.

I know the film needed to show his struggle for survival and everything he went through but the whole middle of the film dragged for me. Also overall there didn't seem to be enough story to fill 2 hours so overall I would only give 6/10.

Agree with you about Revenant, but for me The Martian was fun but cheesy and predictable, and Mad Max was genuinely my worst movie of 2015 (seriously, I absolutely hated it).

I need to re-watch Mad Max at home to see if I just had an "off viewing", as I seriously cannot understand why the world raves about it and yet I felt nothing but scorn and ranting rage over how bad I felt it was... :o

this is exactly how i felt , bits dragged, too long and whilst some truely amazing cinematography the story itself was a bit lacking

Brilliant film.

One question

What was the meaning of him looking straight at the camera in the final shot?

I took it as his journey for revenge was finally over and the realization of this sinking in.

I think mad max was great because of the specticle of the big screen. It was like a roller coaster, you think that last drop was big, the next one is bigger, and bigger. The screen constantly throws you these absurd action sequences and visual specticles down to little things like spraying paint to the mouth or that fire guitar dude.

It doesn't have the same impact at home for me. It's not a great film for story, plot, dialogue or character development. Those are paper thin. Fury Road is all surface with little to no substance but what surface it has!

7.5/10.

Looked spectacular, and the bear scene is pretty spot on as are the action scenes.

It really is complete Oscar bait for Di Caprio though. I actually felt like whilst he puts himself through a lot, his range in the film is quite limited. But I guess there's only so many ways you can express pain and 'annoyance' :p
I would certainly put Michael Fassbender above him for the Oscar, and Bryan Cranston. No clue why Matt Damon is on that list, and Eddie Redmayne is once again, Oscar bait.

Going to see this tonight and im really not that excited....
Time will tell !

I hope DiCaprio wins an Oscar for something soon. Whether or not he deserves it for this over other films.... time will tell

watched this last night

its completely stunning in the photography - I just read it was all naturally lit as well!

8/10 for me

the first hour and last 30 mins are really great
that middle hour, does drag though

Yeah the whole movie bar 1 scene (where he sat in front of a fire by the river) was all natural lit. They would spend the day rehearsing and when the right light came they would shoot it pretty much like a play, everyone knew where they need to be and hit all the spots. Which is a totally different way of filmmaking.
