Ok, I'm currently gaming away with my 9800GX2 and have a few issues and a question.

A) When playing AoC, I get this downward 'ripple' effect in the lower 3rd of the screen. No sign of this in CoD4. Anyone know what that is and how to banish it?

B) Also when playing AoC at any setting, stuff will just suddenly appear as I'm running along, particularly other players and mobs. Again, no sign of this in WoW or CoD4. Is this a GPU settings problem or a game problem?

C) I'm quite new to this and would like to know what these settings are:
i. Bloom on/off
ii. Anti-aliasing (including the 'Q' variant)

Cheers,

A) Not too sure - a vsyncv issue possibly?

B) Welcome to the world of pop-up! You may be able to resolve this issue by adjustinbg your graphics settings, but it's a problem that's rife in MMO's

C) Bloom is a bit like HDR - it adds 'overspill' from light sources; look at a lantern, and you'll see the light 'bloom'. Anti Aliasing removes the 'jaggies' from the edges of polygons, making the game look cleaner and more crisp. The 'Q' stands for quality - QMSAA is a higher quality of anti aliasing than normal.

Could also be texture filtering, with low or "performance" settings, you can have 2 or 3 levels of texture accuracy in a few metres of ground.
Try setting your card's to "high quality", and next try enabling some anisotropic filtering, assuming the machine can handle it.

I had the "ripple effect" once in a Sparkle graphics card, many moons ago; was a hardware fault, unrepairable, swapped it for a different make of the same card, which was fine.

If the ripple thing is Vertical Sync: Right click anywhere on your desktop, then select 'Nvidia Control Panel' then from the list down the left side, select 'Manage 3D settings' then in the list that appears your'll see 'Vertical Sync' click on it and select 'Force on'

As for the pop up, go in to the games video settings, and basically just dump every setting on the highest one available. You should do this with all the other games you mention too, your system can handle it.

I'd imagine it is v-sync for A too. If you have an LCD with a refresh of only 60hz, it really needs to be on, as otherwise you get tearing like you described.

It's known as "screen tearing" and is caused by your frame rate going higher than your monitors refresh rate. To fix it you need to enabled v-sync (caps your FPS at your monitors refresh rate).

Probably just your game settings. You need to increase your "level of distance" also known as "LOD".

Bloom is a way of showing light. A quick google of bloom vs hdr should give you a better idea of what it is.

Anti-aliasing is a way of smoothing the edges of polygons in games. The higher the AA setting, the smoother the edges.

The ripple effect is as others have mentioned a v-sync issue. For some reason AoC does not have a graphics option to turn it on or off so you will need to force it on in the control panel as suggested above.

*Awaits the "Tearing does not exist" Brigade*

another note, i have read in a certain forum somewhere that the GX2 doesn't work well with AOC at the moment maybe in need of a driver update.
Im most likely talking crap :D

My ripple effect WAS a true ripple, continually scrolling down the screen and not a V-Sync issue.
