The Secret World stutter fix?

This is the 3rd time I've given TSW a go after 2 trial key thingies and finally bought it and it still runs like utter ****. The microstuttering is getting to the point where I just can't play it anymore, I've persevered with awful games like Oblivion and Dead Rising that stutter like schizophrenic parrots but this game is in a whole other league. Google searches only show me forum posts of people with the same issues, but the replies are only ever idiotic fanboys flaming the OPs specs, even though some of them are running high end Nvidia cards and Intel procs... lol.

Anybody on here know of any fixes? I've tried low, medium, high and maximum presets and the game still runs like ass, tried DX9 and DX11, tried all sorts of resolutions from 800p to 1200p and it's still the same. Graphical settings do not appear at all to effect how much the game stutters, so there has to be a weird issue somewhere that somebodies figured out?

Specs are Intel i5 3570k, Nvidia GTX670, 8GB of Ripjaw (I think). EDIT: RAM is Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) according to invoice.

I think the worst part is that I've read of people with awful rigs running this game smooth as silk with some of the settings dropped, even on 2006 ATI cards even though this is a Nvidia branded game. It's really annoying as well because the game is fantastic.

My mate has some bad fps with a 670 4gb kfa2 card but i have a msi 2gb power edition 670 card as well and play it pretty smooth. I have the same cpu as you tho and he has a i7 930 i think.

I play it in dx11 and he couldnt just dx9. I play it pretty much maxed like but have somethings down one or two notches that ppl suggested like grass i think lowered a bit and somit like effects maybe i duno, try them all with fraps running see whats helping etc. I think i have some aa on but not a high level, also tessellation is on medium i think or somit.

Btw just curious as to if your cpu is oced at all, im at 4.5ghz which was easy enough to get, duno if you have it oc but if not maybe try that?

Not really sure what else to say really, maybe check if the hdd you installed it on is good enough for the game i mean it could be streaming a lot and if the hdd is slow it might affect it i dunno.

Cheers guys, had a suspicion it may of been a harddrive problem. What kind of MMO requires an SSD for acceptable performance, they are mostly for hardware enthusiasts no? Aww well, was going to need one eventually anyway.

My TSW is installed on a normal hdd tho i think its a 7200rpm one. I wonder if by chance your steam installs are on the same drive as your os is? If so and you have a separate hdd maybe move the game to the drive without the os installed on it, may help?

i get some stutter running on my mechanical hard drive in london, but everywhere else its smooth. frame rate is still a bit choppy, even on r9 290 but doesnt drop far enough to cause lag.

It's everywhere for me, I'm at the zombie part now and going past the Sheriff's office into the town must freeze 7 or 8 times over about 5 seconds, then it'll stutter every 10-20 seconds quite badly no matter where I go everywhere else, 1-2 pauses a time. Driving me around the bend.

hi
i had micro stuttering on some games last year.
After a while i found it was my anti-virus and security software.
turning them off didn't make a differance for me, it had to be uninstalled.
but found other security sotware that didn't effect games.

might help

Try using driver sweeper or something similiar to remove all your old nvidia files, and do a fresh install of the latest drivers. Your hardware is fine, similiar to mine, all my games run nice and smooth

Everything was fine for me until I got to the Blue mountain, then the game went to crap. I had no problems with it in London etc... as soon as I hit BM the game started stuttering so bad I couldn't play. It didn't help if I put all the settings down to minimum.

It was a shame because I was quite enjoying the game, although I don't think many of the players actually get as far as BM, because there seemed to be none to talk to.

If it helps i use avast antivirus software, wouldnt touch anything else tbh especially norton crap. As well as to try to put most gaming folders on the exlude list for scanning of course. I mention this incase it is a av program issue.

On my system it runs well with pretty much all settings at the highest but with lighting and effects detail reduced a single notch from the advanced menu.

Here's a video showing the settings I use and the performance I am getting:

I installed it earlier today and the Blue Mountain is working fine again. I've just remembered how painful it is to designate SP and AG points! So much choice. They really need to let us collect more quests in one go. Blue Mountains still seems a bit dead, so im sure ill have trouble getting through the quests. But ill give it a go, well worth it.

Our specs are almost identical, are you using an SSD by any chance? Hoping my new one will help when it arrives tomorrow. Watching that vid, it does run pretty smooth, but you're not free of stutters either. I'd give an arm and a leg to have that performance though, seriously can't bare it on my system and it's such a good game, and there's no reason for the stuttering besides rubbish developers.

A mate has an identical rig to mine and it runs on his rig like utter pish too.

It was partly because I was recording but I do still get an odd stutter at times, although it's not often enough to be an annoyance. And I have an SSD but the only game on it is Skyrim. Still, seeing that the stutter seems to be when it's loading textures, moving it to an SSD may help.

I'm also not as inclined to blame the developers, as there is a large amount of content that's constantly loaded and it's also a visually pleasing game. So it's no surprise that it's quite demanding. But that probably doesn't apply to your system, as you say you have stutter even with all low settings.

Perhaps there's an incompatibility with drivers somewhere? Maybe the board or sound card need drivers updated?

I'm sitting on a fresh format and the latest WHQL 670 drivers and having no prior drivers installed, also the latest PhysX. What else could I need to update possibly?

Just played again after todays patch and after manually patching the .exe to 4GB using that 4GB patcher thing and it seems to run a little better now. I'll force triple buffering and Vsync tomorrow and put it on the SSD and see if it improves further. I'm not looking for good performance out of the game as I'm not naive enough to expect Funcom to be capable of actual optimisation with their track record, but hopefully it'll become playable.

Installed my SSD today (after a lot of hassle) and completely redownloaded and reinstalled TSW to it and it runs smooth as butter. Couldn't be happier.

Congrats but for me i couldnt possibly consider putting a 30gb game on my 120gb ssd due to the fact it hasnt the space lol.

What size did you get of a ssd?

Oh and im curious now, do you think it was the new ssd or do you maybe think it could have been a complete redownload and install of TSW that might have fixed it if you tried it on the older HDD? Unless you did that and still wasnt great.

Anyhow, pleased for ya. :)
