The sensor inside the Nikon D5200 is made by Toshiba

Made by and Design by are two different things.
Don't assume that all the Nikon sensors that are made by Sony are designed by Sony. Sony and Nikon shared R&D and sensor technology, Nikon pays Sony to fabricate the sensors. Some of the technology that is used by Sony is most likely to be from Nikon under some licensing agreement.

Not the Sensor in the D3100, D3200, D3(s)/D4 etc., etc. are all Nikon designs, mostly fabricated by Aptina.

The D5200 sensor is likely similar to the D3200 sensor, and Nikon is getting that fabricated by Toshiba. Maybe Nikon want to get away from Sony since they now see Sony as a competitor, maybe Toshiba has better pricing.

so is toshiba just fabbing them? never heard of a toshiba camera :o

If not that you have to ask why they're buying in another 24MP crop sensor when they already have one.

The only reason I could think of is the D5200 needs a shallower sensor because of the flip out screen. But this is fairly improbable.

So that is three 24MP APS-C sensors so far - Sony,Nikon and Toshiba??

TBH,I think they are alll probably mostly based on Sony technology but made at different companies. Sony has been in the sensor field far longer than Nikon and designs custom sensors for many companies and loads of different applications.

It is more likely Nikon is paying Sony to design custom versions of the sensor for their purposes. I expect that in some cases they pay Sony to make them too, but I expect they probably evaluate whether other companies can offer them a better deal.

I expect that the sensor division of Sony, while being under the general banner of Sony imaging products, is probably separate to the part which builds consumer cameras.

They do appear to be confusing what "made by" means.

Is Apple's A4 for instance made by Apple? No. It's mostly designed by ARM in Cambridge, Fabbed by Samsung in S. Korea with a little bit of design that is mostly about cost reduction by Apple, probably not out of Califronia either.

Sony hold so much valuable technology in this space, that even kodak where cross licensing things from them when they made their first digital camera IIRC. Mostly due to Sony's work in television back in the early days of commercial CCDs.

So I wouldn't get too surprised, or banner waving that one is 'made by' Nikon,Sony,Toshiba or anyone else!

After all a lot of what makes a bodies image quality, is what acomponies the sensor!

I’ve had my Sony A65 for about 4 months now, mainly used for night photography, as much as i love this camera the low light noise is too much no matter what i do it shows up unless it’s a very sunny day, I would like to see the same shots with the Nikon vs. Sony due to the same sensor but without the translucent mirror.. :s

you can flip up/remove the transparent mirror, but you would have to meter manualy or something (i think it blocks 10-5% of the light)

what iso you use, and what noise reduction?

also remmber it is a crop sensor, a full frame sensor will be much better in low light, all things being equal

You shooting raw or jpeg? Cos i know the sonys jpegs arnt the best. It would be interesting if someone could do a direct comp. Which nikon has the same sensor btw? D3200? I know the d7000 and a57 have the same sensor.
