The Service Pack 3 Effect...

Whats the benefit of slipstreaming service packs into windows installation?

Whenever I reformat, I simply install windows xp, then immediately after that, install SP2. Isn't this just the same thing as slipstreaming? Does slipstreaming give better performance?

Didn't notice that he was scaremongering:confused:

Neither did I lol:rolleyes: Just thought I'd post up to anyway and everyone that was interested as to whether there was any performance increases (again, I'll state that I heard this was the case, hence me benchmarking:))

installs a lot quicker, you get a cleaner os, and you don't have uninstall files hanging around

if you want a faster xp (ie, for gaming), then slipstream sp3, then remove all non-required components with nlite

you can get around 350mb installed windows size, which flies, i run it on my laptop

-edit, dg, it's official, check the windows section of the forums for download links

zip carrot, you should at least get xp64, no point holding your hardware back

Funny thing is I tried dual booting with vista ultimate 64 bit and I just couldnt get use to it. Took a big hit on my pc back then framerate wise (P4 3.4ghz with 4gb ram and a x1950pro on call of duty 4 went from 40fps to 30fps)

May go back to it after exams. But can anyone link me on how to slipstream vista sp1 (and I mean an idiots guide)

And its 2 i's bled :rolleyes::D

I'd wait a little while before using nlite with SP3 its not fully tested yet and you may get some odd errors/problems. The forums can help with most things but I'd be cautious using nlite with 3SP at the moment.

I offically Beta Tested SP3, its now GOLD.

It actually speed up some aspects of PC use (you can google and see for yourself).

Unless you slipstream a SP you can not say for sure its 100% (MS advise this) or at least on a brand new install of XP.

I advise you go to some Tech site esp MS based once.

They will explain Slipstreaming Pro's and Con's (if any) more than I can.

I can tell you for a fact MS advise it.

the removal's aren't added yet (only very minor ones), i'm part of the alpha testing team :)

I think some people are missing the point of this thread; he's not moaning about a reduction in gaming performance post-SP3, he's just showing that (for him at least) some of the ludicrous claims towards the end of last year about SP3 giving massive performance boosts have been shown to be false.

The net result is a minimal change in gaming performance which is pretty much what I'd expect. A service pack released a good 5.5 years after the first SP (never mind the retail release) was never going to give some kind of miracle framerate increase over an up to date SP2 install.

It never ceases to amaze me that some gamers think a Windows service pack is the holy grail of gaming enhancements - I remember reading quite a few comments from them about waiting for Vista SP1. New video card drivers are something to get excited about as they can actually give such drastic improvements (e.g. some of the early Detonator drivers).

What tends to happen is they benchmark a game at say 1900x1200 get 10FPS then apply SP3 and get 11/12FPS and make wild claims of 10-20% performance increase. Something along the lines of that anyway.

Thank you, someone that finally understands me:)

I'm not doing that, I tried them at my default resolution;)

Bloody hell don't shot the messenger:rolleyes::D

Does SP3 include some major update to DirectX9 then? Just I'm surprised anyone is expecting an increase in gaming performance, I thought the speed increases were in other areas.

No one has ever said SP3 will increase the performance of games. They did say, however, it would increase the performance of Office. People didn't read articles properly and jumped to conclusions, as usual.

Correct I have never seen any Concrete results saying it made games faster, only itself and certain App's.
