Thats not quite fair, I for one don't really understand it either and it isn't explained at all in the film.

I simply view it as a 'ooo weird impossible supernatural ongoing' and leave it at that.

never seen the film all the way through, only tad bits and never seen the end but id stab a guess at it being some indication of the house owning him/his soul in some way?
