The Social Dilemma

That section where it speaks about the staggering rise in self-harming hospital admissions and suicides amongst pre-teen and teen girls was genuinely shocking. As was the piece from the guy who was high up in Pinterest and admitted to hiding in his larder so he could go on Pinterest (as a user) without his kids seeing/interrupting. We actually sat and watched it with my kids as I think the whole thing is really important.
Saying that, I went off to do some jobs afterwards and came back 30 minutes later and my wife and both kids were on various social platforms so I guess it didn't sink in too well.

It's a nice thought but then it's on Netflix where people waste hours of their lives on that platform or other streaming platforms on a daily basis.

Screen time is only going in one direction.

I think its more to do with the complete control the likes of instagram/facebook have over what you see that is the issue. Specially for young minds that are easily persuaded.

I think complete control over what you see is pushing it a little. Both of those platforms (Facebook in particular) can be tailored to your needs and if we're talking about children, then their parents have some responsibility for providing the devices and letting them use them until their hearts content.

The main guy in this documentary appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast and he struggled a bit for answers when Joe pushed him. At the end of the day, if we want to see change then it's going to be up to the users without getting into things like laws and regulations. The tech giants are unlikely to implement features that make their users spend far less time on the platform.

The reality of it is, I think many parents haven't a clue what their children are seeing or doing on their phones/tablets.

Regulation is needed for social media though, yes its an incredibly powerful tool that can do good, but its also easily exploited for profit and can lead to some major issues not just for an individual but an entire country as well.
