The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

I can’t find the blog you refer to but if you think you don’t lose any quality then you are only kidding yourself. Almost everyone I know and have seen post on forums share the same opinion. Happy to be proven otherwise with high res examples of the same subject. Maybe all the TC I have used and all the various lenses I tested them with on various platforms have all been faulty?
define "any" as it as little as 0.1% IQ difference?

Or as a significant obvious different(30% or more IQ)
You of course do lose some quality whenever you put another piece(s) of glass in front of another, that's just common sense, but the 1.4x TC s known for being pretty good with a minimal impact on IQ all things considered. It also of course depends on the quality of your glass to begin with. The 2.0x TC causes a far more noticeable drop in IQ.

but how much IQ do you lose? that was the point of my post.

If you can gain an extra 1.4 reach with 1% loss of IQ, its a no brainer

Sorry but do you really expect some arbitrary percentage figure from us? There are tons of reviews online for the 1.4x and 2x since several years that show examples of photos taken with and without the converters. Go use some initiative and read them.

I used the sony 1.4 TC on the 70-200 GM and the 100-400, the images were sharper without the TC and cropping to the equivalent focus length. I tested with two copies of the sony too. I have also found the same results using the Fuji 1.4TC with the xf 100-400 and the canon TC's but if you're getting less than 0.1% then don't ever part with that TC :)

If you don't notice it then great, but there will be at least a small impact which will vary depending on samples and how good the lens you have is to begin with. Many professional reviewers have documented the impact on IQ, but have said that it is acceptable.

That's why I ask how much of an impact Is it? you said it yourself, professional reviewers says none and it's acceptable

They do not say there is "no impact", they say the IQ is still good and acceptable when taking the 1.4x TC into account. The 2.0x TC however is another story with a very noticeable effect on IQ.

Yes that's what I mean.that the IQ is still really good and perfectly usable.

No one here has said you would not suffer no iq loss whatsoever, it's how much you suffer is what I'm debating

The only time you wont really notice it is on a prime lens (400 / 600) but on the 70-200 / 100-400 / 200-600 you will notice the IQ. The most obvious region to me is around the eyes and head, I can usually tell instantly on the likes of flickr if a TC was used.

This 200-600 & A7R4 combo is getting frustrating now, anyone else having issues? Some subjects are no problem and it nails focus everytime, other times its a 90% miss rate. Took a good few shots of this tree creeper, this is the sharpest one. The others are all out of focus :(

What's your setup in terms of focus zone, options, etc?

Tried them all, zone, tracking, expandable etc. Tried fast shutter speeds, tripod. AF priority rather than balanced. Both lenses work fine on other bodies and other lenses work fine on the A7R4. Sony say they are unaware of any issues yet more and more people are popping up with these issues.

So, sold a car yesterday and have £2700 + possible £1k in the bank.

I'm looking to upgrade from a pentax k1. I mainly do general travel, family holidays and the odd portrait.

Current config I'm looking at is:
Sony a7iii
Tamron 28-75
Sony 85 1.8

Would it be worth spending a bit more and going with the sigma 24-70 or is the price per performance not really worth it.

I can't vouch for the quality of the Sigma, but the Tamron 28-75 has spent more time attached to my A7iii than any other lens so far. I love it.

I loved my A7iii - fantastic camera. Now have the A7R Mk 4. Toying with selling the A7iii however I like night photography, and the A7 3 is better at that, far less noise.

Not if you downsample the image to 24mp to match the A7iii's resolution. If it's anything like my A7R3 then there's very little difference when downsampled.
