I have taken the plunge and ordered an AE-5, which should arrive early next week.

I am looking forward to seeing if this is a viable replacement for my X-F Titanium, if not an upgrade. Everything I read and hear about it says it ought to be.

My biggest concern is regarding surround sound on my 5.1 setup. I have seen screenshots with a surround setting, so I am hopeful I will get good output on my rear speakers.

If you are using analogue cables it'll be great 5.1 sound, if optical you are out of luck because it has no dolby digital encoding.

CSGO is one in a million game with actual proper headphone sound setting/support.
But using in game HRTF needs disabling processing of sound card for the game.
So would be lot easier to use AE-5's HRTF and keep game outputting 5.1/7.1.
That would allow keeping same settings for all games. (+movie watching)

AE-5's profiles are presets including likely equalizer curves etc.
But what's needed is having card set for headphone 7.1 output configuration (or something like that) and enabling Surround.
Other acoustic engine settings are just fancy equalizers (that Crystalizer), bass or center channel boosts etc.

Currently listening to a random selection of flac tracks on my MR1’s and the Crystalizer is like adding butter. Acoustic guitar sections have full range and sound natural I’m really loving this combo :D

Do you game with your MR1’s, what settings do you use? Same to anyone using this card, any specific settings for gaming or just the preset?

Just installed the AE-5

However windows always defaults to 24 bit, 48000 Hz no matter what I set it to.

I am using the latest drivers on Windows 10 1809. Also randomly my 5.1 speakers will default to stereo speakers in sound devices.

I have clean booted and reinstalled drivers to no avail

Good old Windows. Remove any Nvidia sound stuff and any Realtek drivers/utilities from your system. Disable onboard sound in your boards bios if you can too. HDMI likes to confuse things especially.

For what its worth for future trouble shooters.

All is fine so far on 1803 with all other sound devices active also. That includes the Asus ROG headset and the Nvidia HDMI

Once I get pushed the update for 1809 I will let you know if this breaks again.

Change your settings then shutdown your machine then power it back on. It's a permission problem Creative has never sorted after all these years.

I am still using the "X-FI xtreme music pci card" and its still working great, The only downside I have to keep on buying motherboards with a old 32bit pci slot. You can get win10 drivers, a bit of a fiddle to get them working, but once working the card works great.

I would say that the onboard would be a good tradeoff with the newer 1220 chipsets
Especially being able to get support on upto date drivers.
  • ALC1220 120dB SNR HD Audio with Smart Headphone Amp
Try this driver on your 1220 and give it a test. Its the newer UAD format (Have used this myself on my Asrock ALC1220

You will need to download the new realtek audio console from windows store unless its packed in this download.

Download for the repack http://www.mediafire.com/file/3mbdwzsjjy2fnz0/Realtek_Universal_Audio_Driver_8522_Repack.zip#

Well actually I am using the onboard sound for my games and I have another set of speakers connected up to the X-FI card, so I can listen to my music while gaming.

I'll give those drivers ago, as I am just using the normal ones from realtek atm.

P.s. I see you like your darts.

Hi any AE5 owners know if this sound cards good for Sennheiser 650HD with regards to bringing out the quality and details ?

My current Soundblaser Z lacks detail with my Sennheiser 650HDs, its able to drive them power wise if not a bit weak but there is a lack of detail or
body.

As far as anything in this range of consumer audio goes it does as good as anything with the 600 series and the amp powers them better than most non-specialist equipment. That said having spent a lot of time building different amp designs for the 600 series it still doesn't drive them as well as I know they can go. To really bring out the detail with the 600 series you need better voltage "drive" capabilities than consumer soundcards can really do.
