The steam box preview..

A mod will kill your link for competitor mentioning in the article no doubt.

No doubt ocuk will try to cash in on steam box.
it's not exactly hard to make one it's just a pc in a box

Yeah other "competitors" are making them and i was a bit surprised to see ocuk not on the list provided by steam in the announcement valve made through steam about a hour ago.

Both of your points I agree with, although I hope they don't kill the link as this will surface sooner or later anyway.

1. Yes it is just a PC in a box, but for those on the edge of console/pc maybe it will drag them in.

2. If OCUK don't have one, why not? Being (imo) the best hardware supplier in the UK it makes sense to have one. Plus the owners (which I believe are German now) would be able to stand for this in the European market too surely?

As I say none of this is actually confirmed yet, abd no buy links, so killing that link would be the same as killing the BF4 thread for saying its avaliable on Mex origin istead of from OCUK :D

but games aren't counted as core products so we are allowed to mention games selling websites ;)

probably because they realise the pc gaming section would likely be dead compared to how active it is now if they did.

Competitors

1. Amazon and places like these etailers/retailers are fine to talk about but please do *NOT* discuss our core business products or link to them such as motherboards, cpus, mice etc.

Example,
Quote:
So buy a CD from Amazon = allowed.
Check out the price of Graphics Cards on Amazon = not allowed.
2. Digital Distribution services are ok to talk about.

3. Retailers and Etailers that only focus on pc hardware are *NOT* to be discussed or linked to.

4. Anyone caught promoting pc hardware on these forums will face warnings and if continued persistence entails then a possible ban will ensue.

This is a news feature, so don't think ive broken any of those

What the **** is Gigabyte thinking?

Price TBD | Intel Core i7-4770R | Intel Iris Pro 5200 | 8GB | 1TB SATA 6Gb/sata

That won't keep up, will it? Unless they throw in another card.

That said though, a lot of these machines spec will change by the time these are out, probly Maxwell etc

This steam machine initiative is awesome. Finally PCs will be pushed for living room gaming.
Now, I already have a PC in living room, so I do not need this. But for console gamer friends, this will be awesome. More gaming PCs among people, the better.

I love the alienware design. iBuyPower looks pretty awesome too. And Digital Storm + Falcon Northwest look great as well. Not to mention Valve's own case looks slick.

I've actually been waiting for the new Brix Pro gaming PC for some time :p

The Iris Pro has been shown to be powerful enough for most stuff I'd be interested in (F1 2013 etc.) and the form factor would be ideal to replace my current Intel NUC. This wouldn't be for the living room, but office. I'm done with big, noisy, power hungry PCs.

Also, I'm not getting some of these case designs. Steamboxes are targeted at the living room, yes? Some of them look like custom-PC projects done by someone in their bedroom. I'm looking specifically at the "Digital Storm" and "Falcon Northwest" which look awful IMO, whilst others just look like standard cube PCs, and not a piece of living room AV that would fit alongside a TV.

Wait, so, STEAM box is just a custom made PC? Is that pretty much it? Why not build your own? I don't get it.

Only selling point for me is STEAM OS.. but that is still in its early days... and then its pretty much just linux.

They need to be around the £300-400 price range and compete with consoles. Noise factor also needs to come into play. They need to be silent but with those specs I doubt it'll be as whisper quiet as my PS4.

I can already play most pc games these days on very high with my 3 year old pc. I'd give STEAM a few years before getting the STEAM BOX right.

The CyberPowerPC looks half decent, I guess. http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/01/07/cyberpowerpc-reveals-its-500-steam-machine-2/

Completely agree with this.

It's just a pc and steamos is free with no hardware lock-in.
Why spend more on getting a 'box' shaped computer with a logo on the side

I think you guys are missing the point, these aren't for pc enthusiasts that can build their own PC. They are for people transitioning from console to PC and don't know how to or can't be bothered to build a PC.

I guess it is also standardizing hardware to a certain extent. If the hardware works on the Steam OS (driver support) then it can eliminate a percentage of hardware configurations meaning more general stability.

The other side is, if they can groom the general public into buying this kind of setup then they can create a sub market similar to that of the console market. Think buying a new system instead of buying new parts, granted there will be people buying parts but I can imagine gimmicks like "Steam OS" ready parts etc.

They could always buy a ready made PC  (more than likely will be cheaper than these steam box things & have more possibility of upgrades)

It's based on linux & these days most hardware is compatible

I still can't see the market for this really. It's all very well saying 'it's for console fans' but it's still a PC. It still has the weaknesses of PC and none of the strengths of consoles.
