Looking for a cheap reliable car to get me to work and back over summer and easter and one of these has been recommended, anyone got any experience of them? Or maybe any alternatives, looking at the 92 - 01 age range so as cheap as possible whilst remaining reliable is a must here.

A serious question but whats fun about them ?? I see absolutely no point in a car that size having 4WD. Surely there are many better small hatches out there.

No, awful little 4x4 hatch. All the disadvantages of the previous generation Suzuki Swift, which was a car which LONG outstayed its welcome, coupled with the disadvantages of 4x4 as well sapping what little power this pathetic excuse for a car actually has.
 
Get the suzuki swift. As said 4wd a complete waste of time in this car.

My friend recently got a Y reg swift in a nice blue colour, standard o.z alloys, standard bucket style seats, 45k miles, 1 owner from new for 900 quid. It's the 1.0 3 cylinder and it does 60mpg, cheap road tax. And supposed to be solid reliable cars.

Not fun or anything like that but seems like bargain reliable motoring to me.
 
Everything smaller than an Escort is a 'fun lil' in the eyes of Foxtrot26, anyone else noticed? He'll be suggesting stripping it out with gas next. He's trying to be penski but missing by miles..

My parents had a Swift for a couple of years and it was a solid enough little car, completely gutless in speed terms which made any overtaking so much more satisfying and in inverse proportion infuriating for the overtaken driver - for some reason people then insisted on re-overtaking me before dropping back to the original speed so I'd overtake them again etc etc.

It will never be much fun aside possibly from the overtaking but I guess you could also count that as somewhat nerve-shredding if you don't have a fair bit of room to build up the speed. However it is cheap and passable for the basics of getting from one point to another with the minimum of fuss.

shut up Fox, have you ever driven one?

try taking one round a twisty back road, its not all about the numbers.

they do handle quite well for standard and for what it is and for what you'll pay for one a fun little car


oh and strip it and add some gas :)
 
Fun little 4WD hatchback in my opinion. Mate had one at university and it would go anywhere, through all the fields etc and took a lot of abuse. I don't think it was permanent 4WD, you could switch it out. Basic fun bit of 4WD action really, much like an old 4WD Panda. Depends what you value in your motoring, cheap as chips back to basics or refined comfort. Some people forget that.

Yep that's right 4 WD is switched by pressing the red button on top of the gearstick, but you must be stationary with the wheels completely straight.

Performance will not be great but if you need 4WD it's a cheap option otherwise plenty of small cheap 2WD hatchbacks around
