The Thermostat....

Perhaps it's not actually cold enough for the heating to kick in? It's 24c in the room here ATM, there's no heating on that's just the ambient temp.

is google incapable of finding you a replacement set of instructions/manual?
no idea how your boiler works but mine has a "hot water", "heating" and "both" type of switch - you can set your thermy up as high as you want but if the "heating" bit isn't on it won't pump it around the radiators. as to water, i have a temp setting too. this is a combi, in case yours isn't.

Set it to required temperature, job done. Turn it off when you go out.

Or you can be like my Mum and have it only come on at set periods of the day and then remain cold for the rest of the day.

if it's a large tank. then it needs to be on for a minimum of 90 minutes for it to heat up to a decent temp from cold.

as for radiators not being warm this could be one of many reasons. your pump may be on it's way out or too slow. your valve could be sticky or broken. they may need bleeding. the trv's may need adjusting. make sure the ones closest to the valve are set lower and that upstairs is set lower than downstairs.

Sure hope it doesn't come to that. Will see how I get on

It doesn't matter who your supplier is, British Gas 3 Star Cover will cover your boiler maintenance, hot water, c/h, drains etc., annual check, for £18 per month.

Christ! That is an absolute doddle, and I am useless at most domestic jobs.
All you need is a rag or large piece of tissue to hold under the outlet, then crack the nut, listen to the hiss, and wait for the dirty water to bubble from the air outlet, swiftly screw the nut back in, job done.

Surely theres a limit to the age of boiler they cover?

That's what my wife does. Drives me nuts. That's not how it's supposed to work.

not really as you have to have a really crap system for it to be worthwhile.

£18 a month for 20 years is £4320.

my boiler is 20 years old and in that time i have spent £400 on it. £200 of that was my own choice (nest thermostat). £200 on a new divertor valve and pump.

the £4120 I have saved I can buy 2 new top of the line boilers fully installed.

decent boilers last and they rarely go wrong. paying £18 a month IMO is stupid unless you have a boiler that is constantly breaking down.
